Incorrectly set iron temperature often leads to unsightly marks on the surface of the fabric. None of us are immune from such unpleasant surprises, but you shouldn’t immediately give up your favorite things and throw them in the trash.
Find out how to remove shine from an iron on clothes at home using available products, especially since you already have some of them in your kitchen. And the video will help you do this quickly and without unnecessary hassle.
Why do iron marks appear on clothes?
In most cases, this problem occurs when ironing fabric that contains synthetics, such as polyester. Housewives do not always pay attention to the labels sewn on the inside of clothes, which contain recommendations for caring for the product.
Incorrectly set temperature of the device leads to the appearance of yellowish spots on light fibers of the fabric and shiny spots on dark ones, which are not so easy to get rid of.
However, you should not immediately run to a hardware store or seek help from a dry cleaner or clothing repair shop. First, you need to try to determine exactly what material a particular product is made of, because the choice of product directly depends on this.
The seventh rule is the use of decorative cosmetics
Proper makeup application will help remove oily shine on your face. Cosmetics should be applied in the following order:
- After cleansing and carrying out all preparatory manipulations, apply primer to your face. It is desirable that this product be a silicone product with a matte finish without a shimmer effect. The primer will even out the microrelief of the skin, cover the epidermis with the thinnest film and prevent the appearance of oily sheen. It will also extend the period of “wearing” makeup, keeping cosmetics from spreading.
- If there are any defects on your face - scars, cicatrices, pimples, enlarged pores, dark circles under the eyes - use a concealer to hide imperfections. The color of the corrector must be selected in accordance with the color of the defect. For example, to disguise red pimples and scars, a greenish product is suitable, and in order to hide bruises under the eyes, you can use a yellow or orange product.
- Apply foundation. For skin that is constantly oily, you can choose a product with a light texture and beneficial properties. For example, BB or CC cream with a matte finish.
- In order to give the face additional matte, it is recommended to use mineral powder. It will not clog pores and will protect against shine.
Other decorative cosmetics - eye shadow, lipstick, blush - should be dry. In this case, even 5-6 hours after applying makeup, others will not think that your face is shiny.
Silk fabric
soda ash on hand We invite you to get acquainted with this method in more detail:
- You must first prepare a special mixture. Mix lye powder with water until a thick paste forms.
- Apply the resulting mixture to the shiny stain and wait until it hardens on the surface of the fabric.
- Next, rinse the item in warm water.
- During the next ironing procedure, choose a gentle mode to prevent repeated damage to the fabric.
Tip: There is another way to deal with stains on silk products. It is enough to mix water and peroxide in a 1:1 ratio. You must first treat the stain with this product, and then dry it in any available way.
Third rule - scrubbing
After washing, once every 2-3 days you can treat the surface of your face with a scrub. The use of such a product provides additional cleansing and a massage effect, due to which oily shine will occur less frequently.
You can buy a scrub for oily skin at a cosmetics store or prepare it yourself. If you choose the latter option, you can use several folk recipes. The main thing is that the scrub consists of two components - one acts as a base, the second as an exfoliator. Our experts recommend testing the following options:
- The base is something thick or viscous - natural yogurt without additives, sour cream, glycerin, honey.
- An exfoliant is something that has small particles without sharp edges - finely ground table or sea salt, soda, crushed oatmeal, fine brown sugar, fresh or used coffee grounds.
- You can also add moisturizing, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory components to the scrub, for example, a few drops of lemon juice or gelatin swollen in water.
- After mixing the components, scrubbing must be done quickly, as the exfoliant may dissolve in the base. The scrub is applied to the surface of the face with soft circular movements along massage lines. After rubbing the product into the skin, wait a couple of minutes and rinse with plenty of warm water.
Wool fabric
A product such as onions can be found in any home. It can be used not only for preparing various dishes, but also to remove lasa from pants or dress. They act like this:
- Peel the onion and cut it.
- Rub one of the halves onto the stain. Continue the procedure until it becomes lighter.
- All that remains is to wash the item by hand or in the washing machine with plenty of fabric softener. This way you can neutralize the unpleasant smell of onions.
Method 4 – soap
Ordinary laundry soap can also remove stains from a student’s trousers or your favorite suit pants. You can clean your clothes with it like this:
- First, you should prepare a weak soap solution. To do this, you need to use only ordinary laundry soap without impurities or dyes (such products usually work worse).
- Next, you should take a small brush (if you don’t have one, you can use a fresh kitchen sponge), put a small amount of soap solution on it and wipe the shiny areas with it.
- After this, all that remains is to let the trousers dry and iron them through gauze.
If you don't want to bother with a sponge, you can use a mild soap solution in another way. All you need to do is moisten the gauze through which you will iron your trousers in the future in this solution. In order to achieve the best effect from such cleaning, use a weak solution of vinegar: you will need to wipe the pants with it before ironing.
Synthetic fabric
Removing an unsightly stain from synthetics is quite simple:
- Soak a piece of gauze in a solution of water with the addition of acetic acid, and then squeeze it well. This is necessary in order to remove any remaining moisture.
- Turn on the iron and set the panel to steam mode.
- Place gauze folded in several layers on the item and gently iron the desired area. The steam neutralizes the shine on the fabric due to the acidic environment of the solution.
Important: for 100 ml of water you need to add 100 ml of 9% acetic acid. Do not forget that for safety reasons it is better to protect your face with a mask and your hands with rubber gloves. Animals and small children should be temporarily restricted from entering the room where you are going to perform the procedure.
Method 8 – pumice
This option on how to clean a thing is only suitable for products made of very dense materials. Using it is extremely simple: you will need to take a pumice stone (if you don’t have it, you can use sandpaper) and gently rub the lass with this product. This must be done very carefully, otherwise you risk damaging the fabric.
Important:
Before treating pants in visible areas in this way, be sure to test this method on an inconspicuous area. This way you can determine whether this method is worth using or not.
Universal methods for removing shiny marks on fabric from any materials
Not everyone can determine the composition of fibers by eye. Therefore, it will be useful for you to learn about universal and equally effective methods that will help you deal with iron stains.
Pumice
Some have successfully removed stains from clothing using pumice, an abrasive nail file, or a razor. When choosing such a method, you should be extremely careful, because the slightest mistake can ruin the item irrevocably. Therefore, we recommend leaving this method as a last resort.
Steaming
If the area of stains on clothes is small and they are not too noticeable, you can try to remove them by steaming. This method is especially relevant if you are interested in how to get rid of shine from an iron on trousers and jackets made of suiting fabric:
- Cover the shiny spot with a piece of gauze or a piece of cardboard.
- Set the desired mode.
- Iron the problem area, periodically dousing it with steam.
- Continue until the stain is completely gone.
Important: the procedure can only be carried out if your device is equipped with a steam function.
Soap
You can also get rid of shine on your favorite things using a soap solution:
- Grate a bar of laundry soap (72%) .
- Make a soap mixture from shavings and warm water.
- Dampen a piece of gauze, wring it out well and place it on the area to be treated. Using a preheated iron, iron the fabric through it.
- After the shiny spot disappears, let the product dry on its own. Do not use a battery or heater.
Tip: do not press too hard on the iron while ironing; it is better to steam the fabric at a short distance. Also, do not forget that synthetic suit fabric does not like exposure to high temperatures.
Lemon juice
You can remove iron stains left on white, black or colored clothes with the juice of fresh lemon or lime. It is enough to moisten the problem area with it, and then wait for it to dry completely on the surface of the fabric. After that, all that remains is to wash the item.
Important: if you still haven’t managed to remove the stain from your clothes, then don’t despair right away. It can always be disguised by decorating the area with beautiful embroidery or appliqué.
Method 1 – tea
This is the easiest way to remove shiny marks from trousers after ironing. However, it can only be used on dark fabrics. It should be used like this:
- First you need to brew natural black tea.
- Use fresh tea leaves to wipe the areas where shiny spots appear.
- After this, you should carefully dry the fabric and iron it through gauze.
Advice:
If you are afraid that stains will remain on your item after such treatment, be sure to test this product on inconspicuous areas of your trousers. If after drying the tea you do not notice any stains on them, you can safely use this recipe to combat shiny marks.
Fabric made from natural materials
The effectiveness of a particular method of dealing with iron stains on fabric made from natural material depends on the degree of damage to the fibers. Give preference to more gentle methods, because any, even the slightest impact, does not have the best effect on clothes. In addition, cotton and linen are quite delicate and sensitive to any chemical compounds.
Below you will find a list of remedies that will help get rid of the problem in a short time. Among them are those that were already mentioned earlier in this article ( soda ash, onions, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and laundry soap ). You will find detailed information about them above. In the meantime, we invite you to learn about several new methods that have not yet been considered.
Sour milk
This product can make not only wonderful pancakes for breakfast, because many housewives also use it to combat marks on clothes after ironing:
- Mix warm water and sour milk in equal quantities in a basin.
- Soak the damaged item in the resulting solution for a couple of hours.
- After the specified time has passed, transfer the clothes to the washing machine and wash them by adding regular powder.
Vinegar
Some housewives use wine vinegar to combat shine. We advise you not to do this, otherwise even more difficult to remove marks may appear, and the problem will only get worse.
Borax
This solution can remove iron stains on cotton and linen clothes:
- Pour boiled water into a glass and add 1 tsp. Boers.
- Apply the resulting solution from a spray bottle to the stain.
- Wait a bit for the reaction to occur.
- Rinse the item and iron it with an iron.
Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia
A mixture of peroxide and ammonia solution also does an excellent job of removing iron marks on clothes:
- Mix these two liquids, maintaining a 5:1 ratio.
- Treat the stain with the solution using a cotton pad.
- Leave the item so that the composition has time to dry.
- Wash your clothes again by hand or in the machine.
9% acetic acid
In this way you can deal with minor shine on black clothes:
- Dilute a small amount of acetic acid in warm water.
- Soak the damaged item in the resulting solution for a couple of hours.
- After the designated time has passed, dry the clothes thoroughly and hang them to dry.
Tip: It is not necessary to completely soak the item in the solution. It is enough to apply gauze soaked in liquid to the shiny area and thoroughly steam the area you need with an iron.
Boric acid
This antiseptic can be found in everyone's first aid kit. It is often used to treat wounds and scratches, however, few people know that it is also suitable for removing iron stains from light-colored items:
- Dilute 3 tablespoons of boric acid in 3-4 liters of warm water.
- Soak the damaged item in the resulting solution for 3 hours.
- After this time, rinse the clothes in water and dry.
Petrol
It is believed that using gasoline you can successfully remove the shine from an iron:
- Soak a cotton pad in the fuel, and then gently apply to the area you want.
- Repeat the procedure several times if necessary.
Tip: Try neutralizing the smell of petroleum products with lemon juice.
Black tea
Strong tea leaves can easily remove the shine from the iron. Simply rub the shiny areas with a cotton pad previously soaked in the prepared solution. Do not forget that for this quick method, only sheet tea leaves are suitable, and not packaged ones.
Method 2 – potatoes
This method is also more suitable for dark fabrics. You need to use it like this:
- To begin, you should take large potatoes, wash them, peel them and cut them in half.
- Next, you will need to rub the potato cut into the places where shine has appeared from wear. Please note: this should only be done with a fresh, juicy cut. If you have already mashed it a little, or the potatoes have dried out, cut off a slice again.
- After this, you will need to let the pants dry on their own. There is no need to rub them with a cloth or dry them with a hairdryer - this will only ruin the fabric.
After this procedure, you will only need to go through the problem areas with a clothes brush again and iron the pants through the gauze. Now they are completely ready to wear.
How to clean a white shirt
You can remove a shiny mark from a light cotton shirt using water, ammonia and peroxide:
- Stir 1 teaspoon of peroxide and 5 drops of ammonia in half a glass of water at room temperature.
- Soak a piece of gauze in the liquid, place it on the stain and wait 10-15 minutes.
- At the end of the procedure, wash the item and iron it again.
Important: this method is suitable for removing marks from white things. For bright fabrics (pink, blue, yellow) the composition is not used, as the color may fade or even lose its saturation.
Salt
Ammonia is also useful for this method. Add a teaspoon of salt to three teaspoons of ammonia.
After treatment, wipe the jacket with a damp sponge and hang it out for airing.
Stir to form a solution. Wet and wring out the cloth, wipe the shiny areas.
Features of removing gloss from jeans
When your trousers become shiny, not everyone knows what to do in this case. Steam treatment helps combat iron marks on jeans. Hang your trousers on a hanger, and place a bowl of boiling water below. The evaporating moisture will gradually saturate the fibers of the fabric, which will remove visible abrasions on the surface and restore its original structure.
Now you know everything about how best to remove shine from an iron on various types of fabric, as well as what to do if your trousers, skirts or shirts are shiny. The above methods are proven, you just have to use one of them. Of course, it is not always possible to cope with the problem on your own. Therefore, in particularly difficult cases, we recommend seeking help from specialists. Good luck!
Useful tips
Finally, some useful tips:
- do not neglect the ironing rules; often problems can be prevented at this stage. Iron mainly from the wrong side, and it is better to iron “capricious” fabric with damp gauze or interlayer fabric;
- Monitor the condition of the iron. A dirty soleplate or scale deposits in the appliance can complicate routine household processes;
- Treat complex fabrics with a steamer or steam blow from an iron;
- It is better to dry pants vertically on a special hanger. Often there is a shine left on the trouser fabric from clothespins or drying rope;
- Do not allow your outerwear to become heavily soiled. Light shine can be removed at home, but extensive stains are best removed by dry cleaning;
- Before processing, check the reaction of the fabric to aggressive agents on the wrong side or a special piece of cloth (manufacturers often attach them specifically for these purposes along with tags and spare accessories).
Cleaning a down jacket
The upper part of down jackets is usually made of synthetic materials, which can be quite demanding when it comes to cleaning methods. The filler also requires a delicate handling. It is not advisable to wet it frequently. Therefore, in case of extensive, heavy or unknown type of contamination, the down jacket should be dry cleaned. Here it will be cleaned without excess water.
If the product does not allow it to get wet, then you can use one of the ways to wash the shiny areas on the down jacket. If shiny marks are left by grease, you can use a stain remover. It must be used strictly according to the instructions! This type of contamination can also be dealt with using the following product: 1 tbsp. l. vinegar and the same amount of salt should be dissolved in 0.5 liters of water. Wipe the shiny area with the resulting solution and dry it.
If the down jacket has been worn, it needs to be washed (if the product is machine washable). A jacket and 3 tennis balls are placed in the machine. Turn on the delicate mode with minimal spin speed, and then dry thoroughly. If there are heavily soiled areas, it is recommended to wash them before putting the product into the machine.
Steaming
The first way we will use to remove shine from trousers is a very simple and effective steaming
. To do this you will need to do the following:
- First you need to put a sufficient amount of water into the pan, put it on the fire and wait until it boils.
- Then you need to take the trousers from which you want to remove the shine, hang them loosely and secure them over the pan so that the steam hits exactly the place where the trousers shine.
- Wait a while for the trousers to thoroughly absorb moisture, after which you can remove them and use a stiff brush to wipe the shiny areas to remove the shine.
- Now you can dry your pants naturally. To do this, you can hang them outside or on the balcony, and when they dry, you will see that the shiny marks have disappeared.
The reason for the appearance of shiny marks
Shine on things can appear for a variety of reasons, from prolonged wear to thermal treatment that was carried out incorrectly. Spots and shiny stripes appear instantly after ironing if you have chosen the wrong temperature setting.
Need to know:
The fabric label always indicates which temperature regime best suits a specific type of fabric, and in no case should you deviate from these recommendations, as this can lead not only to small stains, but also to complete unusability of your favorite wardrobe item.
