How to replace a bearing on an Indesit washing machine

  • Video
  • A bearing is an important element of the internal structure of a washing machine. It is installed on the drum and serves as a support for the shaft that rotates it. At all stages of washing, and especially during spinning, the bearing assembly experiences serious loads, so the part often fails.

    The bearing installed in the drum of the washing machine can be replaced with your own hands.

    Most modern budget models of Indesit washing machines, such as WISL 82, WISL 85, WISL 102, WISL 105 X, IWSD 5085, are equipped with a solid tank, which makes access to the bearings difficult. Collapsible tanks are installed on older models with a mechanical control system, for example, Indesit WI 101 EX.

    If, when a bearing fails, you are offered to completely replace the washing machine tank, it may be better to turn to other specialists who can make a spot replacement and save your budget.

    Manufacturers of household appliances, if a bearing is damaged, recommend replacing a non-separable tank with all the parts inside: drum, shaft, bearings, etc. The cost of spare parts alone in the case of such repairs can reach half the cost of the washing installation itself. However, there is a way out - you can try to replace the bearing yourself or entrust it to a specialist.

    Even service centers do not trust newbies to replace a washing machine bearing, so if you do not have the necessary experience and do not have the necessary tools, it is better to entrust the repair to specialists.

    Bearings are important elements of the internal structure of a washing machine.

    In this article we will tell you how to replace the bearing in an Indesit washing machine with a glued, non-separable tank. Repairing an installation with a tank that is disassembled will be similar, except for the need to open the plastic.

    Why do you need to change the bearing?

    Bearing failure is a problem with many Indesit washing machine models. Typically, the part is designed for 6-10 years of service, but additional loads, for example, exceeding the norm of laundry loaded into the drum, reduce the service life of the metal rings.

    Often the first thing to fail in a bearing assembly is the seal - a rubber gasket that protects metal parts from contact with water. Water from the drum gets onto the bearings, washes out the lubricant, and the parts can no longer ensure smooth rotation of the shaft. Knocking, grinding and other unpleasant sounds occur, especially during spinning. If you shake the drum by hand, play will be noticeable relative to the tank.

    Remember that even the slightest mistake when repairing the installation can lead to irreparable consequences. In order not to damage the equipment with your own hands, before you start replacing the bearing, carefully read the operating instructions for the washing machine.

    You should not delay replacing the bearing - improper rotation of the drum can lead to destruction of the shaft, the drum itself, the tank and other parts of the washing machine.

    Features of breakdown

    If you follow the operating rules, you will need to replace the bearing no earlier than after 6 years of using the machine. It is after this time that the part is subject to natural wear and tear. Failure before the specified period indicates the influence of the following factors:

    • Constantly overloading the drum. Imbalance of linen leads to increased load on the supporting part and accelerated wear of the part;
    • deformation of the oil seal - a rubber sealing element that protects the bearing from moisture. If the seal is damaged, water washes away the protective layer and seeps into the bearing, causing corrosion and failure.

    Constant overload of the drum can lead to rapid wear of the bearings
    Constant overload of the drum can lead to rapid wear of the bearings

    The main external sign of a bearing failure is increased hum, noise and vibration of the washing machine, and sometimes an unpleasant grinding noise during the spin cycle. You may also notice moisture appearing under the machine. If, when turning the drum manually, uneven rotation is felt, this indicates the formation of backlash - a gap between the drum and the tank. All of these signs indicate the need to replace the bearing on the Indesit washing machine.

    Preparing for replacement

    In order to replace the bearing, the washing machine will have to be disassembled. You need to be prepared for the fact that the repair may take several days, therefore, if possible, it is better to carry out the work not in the bathroom, but in the garage, shed or other utility room.

    It is necessary to prepare new bearings and oil seal. You can find spare parts in specialized stores if you name the model of your unit. It is better to purchase parts manufactured by the washing machine manufacturer.

    Also required for repairs:

    • a set of flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
    • socket and open-end wrenches;
    • hammer;
    • bit;
    • hacksaw for metal;
    • pliers;
    • glue;
    • sealant;
    • WD-40 product.

    The washing machine is disconnected from the network, the water supply tap on it is turned off, and the water supply and drainage hoses are disconnected. If there is water left in the tank, it is drained through the emergency pipe.

    Preparatory stage

    After identifying the malfunction, you need to properly prepare to repair the machine. Bearing replacement work requires certain skills and knowledge of the unit. The most difficult thing in this process is getting to the worn parts. To carry out sequential bearing replacement in an Indesit washing machine with your own hands, you will have to completely disassemble the unit, which will take a lot of time and effort.

    Before starting repairs, prepare all the necessary tools
    Before starting repairs, prepare all the necessary tools

    If you decide to make the replacement at home, you should first prepare all the necessary tools. This will allow you to concentrate on the process of disassembling the device and not run to the garage for every little thing. To replace the bearing, gather the following tools:

    1. Open-end and socket wrenches.
    2. Hammer.
    3. Phillips and flathead screwdrivers.
    4. Pliers.
    5. Bit.
    6. A hacksaw or grinder.
    7. Softener WD-40.
    8. Sealant or glue.
    9. New replacement parts.

    To choose the right new bearings and seals for your Indesit machine, you need to know which elements are installed in your equipment. For example, for the WISL 85 EX model, bearings of type 2o4 and 2o5 are suitable, while for the Indesit WI 101 EX washing machine, parts designated 2o2 and 2o3 are needed. It is best to remove the old bearings and seals and take them with you to the store before purchasing to select similar items. Be sure to purchase two oil seals and bearings at once, even if only one part breaks. If you miss this moment, you will soon need to change all the elements again.

    If you doubt your abilities, the right decision would be not to try to fix the machine yourself, but to immediately entrust the repair to an experienced specialist from the service center.

    Before starting disassembly, disconnect the unit from the mains and unscrew the intake hose, first turning off the water supply tap. Then disconnect the drain hose from the sewer pipe. If there is any water left in the machine, it must be drained through the filtration compartment located below behind a small panel.

    Bearing replacement: procedure

    To get to the bearings, you need to disassemble the washing machine body and remove almost all the parts.

    Dismantling parts

    In order to remove the top cover of the washing machine, you need to unscrew the two bolts securing it from the back. The panel is moved back a little and raised up. In some models of Indesit washing machines, the front part of the lid is secured with plastic latches. You can remove the part from such latches if you give a few light blows to the cover in a direction away from you.

    To dismantle the dashboard , you need to remove the detergent compartment by pressing the latch in the center. In the resulting niche, unscrew several bolts securing the dashboard. It is removed from the latches and, having disconnected the wires, put it aside.

    At the top of the washing machine there are: a counterweight, a pipe connecting the powder compartment to the tank, a water intake valve and its contacts, as well as a pressure switch, its tube and contacts. All these parts should be removed.

    The location of the parts and the connection diagram of the contacts can be photographed so that after the repair you can quickly and correctly reassemble the washing machine in the reverse order.

    Before removing the front panel , you need to remove the hatch door and rubber seal from it. Dismantling begins with the cuff - it is bent with a screwdriver and carefully removed. The door is removed by unscrewing several bolts that hold the hinge.

    The washing machine drum rotates using a shaft that passes through its back wall through a bearing, then exits through the tub and is connected to a pulley from the outside. To get to the bearing, the pulley must be disconnected . It is better to use a T40 hexagonal star wrench and loosen the bolt, gradually loosening it. If the part does not give in, spray it with WD-40.

    To get to the drum and the bearings located in it, you need to disassemble the tank . In the collapsible part, simply unscrew the bolts, and the solid tank needs to be cut as shown in the photo below.

    First of all, using a drill, holes are made around the perimeter of the weld at a distance of approximately 5 cm from each other.

    Then unscrew the bolts attaching the drum to the tank, unfasten the latches and remove the tank wall. Now you can begin replacing the bearings in the drum.

    Replacing bearings

    How to change a bearing? First you need to remove the old oil seal from the socket, then knock out the metal washers. Start with a larger outer bearing. The drum is laid with the hatch opening down, the chisel is placed on the outer rim of the metal ring and hit with a hammer. The inner bearing is removed in the same way.

    When replacing bearings, it is important not to damage the drum housing, so be careful that the bit does not come off while knocking out the bearing.

    The freed sockets are cleaned of dirt and rust, treated with WD-40 and lubricant. New parts are driven into place, hitting only the outer edge. The bearings must fit into the sockets all the way.
