Error E22 in a Bosch dishwasher - how to fix it

Modern technology allows you to monitor the condition of parts. Manufacturers have implemented a system in dishwashers that informs about malfunctions using codes. Unfortunately, even warning technology does not always allow us to correctly display the cause of a breakdown.

Error E22 for a Bosch dishwasher is one of the most difficult to decipher. Despite the detailed description of the code in the instructions, the indicated problem does not always correspond to the real one. Code E22 can occur for various reasons.

Circumstances under which error E22 appears

Error code E22 appears on Bosch machines towards the end of the cycle. Usually there are 5-7 minutes left before the end of the program when the machine freezes and stops working. Most users solve the problem by restarting the device. However, this method can only be considered a temporary measure, since after a couple of cycles the situation repeats itself.

Moreover, the system can display the code in the middle or at the beginning of the program. The user tries to resume the dishwasher using the usual method: by turning off the device and turning it on after 10-15 minutes. However, having reset the error, the user is faced with a new problem - the E24 code pops up. The system, after cycling for 15-20 minutes, will freeze again.

If you ignore the problem, error codes will appear regularly. And constantly turning the device on and off can cause damage to the control unit. Moreover, repairs will be very expensive. Therefore, restarting the device is permissible only when the error first appears. After the cycle is completed, repairs must begin.

How to fix the problem

The first thing to do is inspect your dishwasher. Open the door and remove all dish baskets from the hopper. Take out the filter, which is located at the bottom of the hopper. Clean it of dirt and rinse the mesh under high pressure water. You can use a brush for cleaning.

Check the location of the drain hose. If it is bent or squashed somewhere, then it is not surprising that the water does not drain and an error appears. Check to see if the impeller rotates normally. If not, then remove it from its place and clear the bushing of debris.

All manipulations did not bring results? Is the fault code still shown on the display? Then you need to look deeper. You'll have to disassemble the dishwasher a little.

What do we have to do:

  1. Unplug the machine.
  2. Disconnect all communications.
  3. Place an old blanket and a rag to turn the PMM “on its back.”
  4. Unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the bottom cover.
  5. Unscrew the leakage sensor bolt.
  6. Remove and set the lid aside.
  7. You will have access to the internal parts of the equipment.
  8. Disconnect the end of the drain hose from the pump. To do this, use pliers.
  9. Inspect the hose for blockages, rinse under pressure from the tap. If the hose is damaged or worn, install a new element.

Be careful when choosing replacement parts. Choose only components for your brand and model of Bosch PMM, otherwise the purchased part may not fit.

Now you need to remove the drain pump and check its impeller:

  • disconnect the wiring leading to the pump;

  • unscrew two screws on one side and the other;

  • turn the pump and remove it from its seat;
  • inspect the impeller, free the base from threads and other debris;
  • then check the pump volute to make sure nothing is blocking its operation.

Carry out the installation in reverse order. After completing the work, error E 22 should disappear. Be careful when loading the dishwasher, thoroughly clean the dishes from food residues to avoid dirt and blockages.

Error interpretation

If any error occurs, please refer to the instructions included with the device. The user manual contains explanations of all codes. According to the instructions from, error E22 means “filter blocking”. Pieces of food clogged the mesh located at the bottom of the device. As a result, the system cannot eliminate the used fluid. Sometimes not only the mesh can become clogged, but also the filter itself. Pieces of food may get inside the part.

At this stage, problems arise for most users. Inspecting the filter and mesh does not eliminate the error, as they often turn out to be almost clean. The situation becomes a dead end, because the error does not correspond to a breakdown.

In fact, in almost half of the cases, contaminants accumulate inside the car. Therefore, the device will have to be partially disassembled.

Determining the cause of the breakdown becomes more difficult when code E24 appears. Some repair specialists recommend paying attention to the condition of the drain hose. Approximately 20% of all malfunctions are explained by damage to a part or blockage.

However, more often than not, a double error indicates a problem with the pump. Dishwashers have a less powerful pump than washing machines. However, their failure is not a rare problem. The appearance of errors E22 and E24 can be caused by a thread or piece of food getting into the gap between the impeller and the pump. In this case, it is easy to fix the problem in a short time. The only question is correct and timely diagnosis.

What does the fault code mean?

Error code E 22 means that there is water in the pan and there are blockages in the drain system. Here's what could have caused the breakdown:

  1. Drain filter. Pieces of food from dishes, small debris, glass fragments - everything is washed off and retained by the filter mesh. It is clear that waste water cannot go down the drain, so the system generates an error.

  2. Drain hose. If you notice that code E22 alternates with E24, and after checking it turns out that the filter is clean, then you should inspect the hose. We will describe how to do this below.

  3. Problems with the sprinkler. It happens that food gets into the bushing between the impeller and the pump. The sprinkler operation is blocked.

If the error codes alternate with each other, it means that the pump impeller is not rotating. The reason may be a thread or pieces of food that have wound around the base and blocked the operation.

Reason for error E22

So, the system may issue a code due to various circumstances. The main reasons causing the malfunction are: clogged filtration system, damaged and clogged drain hose, broken sprinklers.

Filter clogged

The filtration system traps food particles and broken glassware, so its cleanliness is important for proper operation of the product. The net is used to collect small pieces of food. The garbage filter is used to block large residues, undissolved detergent and other dirt.

The inlet filter is located at the connection point of the inlet hose to the device. This filter is a small mesh. Its main function is to collect large debris that may be contained in tap water. If too much dirt has accumulated, the device cannot drain waste water. This provokes the appearance of code E22.

Drain hose is faulty

Problems with the hose often cause an error to appear. Sometimes debris can block water access. Therefore, the hose must be disconnected from the device and pipe in order to rinse under water. Sometimes the blockage may be located in the siphon pipe.

In other cases, the appearance of the E22 code is caused by damage to the hose or its kinks. In this case, it is better to completely replace the part, since the repair may result in a water breakthrough. Flooding repairs can cost more than buying a new hose.

The impeller sprinkler has failed

The system can indicate a breakdown of the sprinkler with different codes, E22 is one of them. In this case, the problem occurs due to debris trapped in the space between the pump bushing and the impeller. Sometimes the spray arm becomes blocked due to a small thread or small pieces of food. It can be very difficult to notice them, so the inspection must be carried out very carefully.

Models Siemens, Neff

In Siemens and Neff dishwashers, the meaning of the error code e22 is similar to the malfunction coded under the same combination in Bosch units. Experts explain the frequency of filter clogging with low motor power. Manufacturers do not equip dishwashers with powerful motors, as in washing units. And since the amount of food debris on plates and other kitchen utensils is much larger and larger in quantity than dirt on laundry, filters become clogged more often.

Error code

Often, code E22 appearing alternately with error E24 indicates a malfunction of the impeller in the motor. This could be due to:

  • chicken bone,
  • feather,
  • a small slice of onion or the rest of any food.

To return the Siemens, Neff dishwasher to functionality, you need to clean the water outlet hoses and make sure the motor is working properly.

Troubleshooting

It is impossible to restore the operation of the dishwasher without dismantling the walls and parts. In order for the device to fully carry out the cycle, it is necessary:

  1. Prepare the car for disassembly. The dishwasher must be unplugged by unplugging the power cord. Then you need to turn off the water supply and make sure there is no water in the product chamber. All holders and grids for dishes must be removed.
  2. Clean the drain filter. This part is located inside the camera, in its lower half. The filter must be unscrewed and carefully inspected. Any foreign objects must be removed and the part must be washed. The filter mesh must be removed and cleaned; if necessary, you can use a toothpick. It is also necessary to inspect the impeller; if the part does not rotate, then it needs to be removed. And the connection site should be cleared of debris; there should be no dirt left on the bushing. After cleaning, the removed filters must be installed correctly. When inserting parts, a characteristic click should occur. Installation must be carried out in accordance with the markers on the filter and the machine itself.
  3. Clean the drain pipe. To remove the part you will need to unscrew the mounting bolts. If there is a blockage, the pipe must be rinsed under water.
  4. Check the functionality of the heating element. If after performing the above steps the error continues to occur, then it is necessary to inspect the heating element. To remove it, you will need to place the device on the back wall. It is advisable to place a blanket or rag under the car. To dismantle the pallet, you need to disconnect the plastic clips. There is a plastic block in the middle of the bottom panel; it has holes for tubes. There is a heating element inside it; its serviceability is checked using a multimeter.
  5. Inspect and repair the pump. The part is located next to the heating element and should be disconnected from the contacts. Then unscrew the bolts securing the part, two of them on each side. To remove the part, it must be rotated. Now you need to check the performance of the impeller. If movement is difficult, you will need to remove the rotor from the bushing. It is necessary to remove any visible debris, and then return the disconnected parts to their place.
  6. Inspect the drain hose. It is necessary to disconnect the part from the device and pipe. You can use pliers for dismantling. Now the part needs to be inspected for blockages. If the hose is clogged, it must be rinsed under a powerful stream of water. Washing will help identify damage to the part. If the integrity of the hose has been compromised, you will need to purchase a new one.
  7. Assemble the device. All removed parts are returned to their place, bolts are installed and wires are connected. At the final stage, the device is connected to the water supply and sewerage system, and the cord is inserted into the network. After assembly, it is important to check the machine by performing a test run.

Recommendations for action

To check everything at once, proceed in the following sequence:

  1. Disconnect the device from communications - electricity and water supply.
  2. Open the bin door and remove the dish baskets, cutlery trays and other accessories.
  3. Remove the plastic spray arm located at the bottom of the wash tank.
  4. Twist the garbage filter, clean it and rinse it.
  5. Remove the filter mesh and also clean it - if it is difficult, use a toothpick.
  6. Tighten the fasteners, remove the pipe and check it - it may also be clogged.
  7. Turn the equipment upside down, twist the plastic holders on which the tray is attached, and remove it by pulling it up along with all the parts.
  8. In the center of the pan you will see a large plastic unit, with outlets for pipes - it contains a heating element (water heater), which can be checked at the same time. We wrote about the heater separately.
  9. There is a pump (pump) on the side of the heating block - twist it after removing the wiring.
  10. Check how well the pump impeller rotates and whether it is clogged. If rotation does not occur or is too difficult, remove the rotor from the bushing and inspect it.
  11. Put the pump in place, check the waste fluid drain hose for clogging.
  12. Reassemble the equipment in reverse order. Having done everything correctly, you will get rid of the code on the screen that the technician decided to show you in order to avoid a total breakdown.

Now you know how to fix any breakdowns that caused the E22 code in the Bosch PMM.

Prevention

Any appliance, including a dishwasher, may have problems with its operation. These could be either software glitches or technical malfunctions. To prevent most of these troubles, the user should carry out regular preventive maintenance. This involves performing the following steps:

  • It is recommended to always check the inlet water temperature. The optimal value is 50°-60°;
  • It is necessary to monitor the amount of rinse aid in the dishwasher and prevent its shortage;
  • Regular cleaning of filters is required;
  • Follow the rules of operation, including the principles of arrangement of utensils;
  • Protecting the dishwasher from power surges;
  • To prevent the occurrence of unpleasant odors inside the machine, the door should be left half open.

Some work should be carried out with the machine completely disconnected from the power supply and water supply. This will ensure the safety of the user, and is also confirmed by the requirement of the service rules.

Repair sequence

Step 1: Unplug the dishwasher.

Step.2: Disconnect communications.

Step 3: Empty the dishwasher chamber from dishes, racks, and trays.

Step 4: Take out the water diffuser.

Step 5: Clean the debris filter.

Step 6: Clean the strainer.

Step 7: Remove the bolts and remove the pipe, clean if necessary.

Step 8: Carefully turn the car upside down and unscrew the pan fastenings.

Step 9: Remove the leak sensor.

Step 10: Pull out the tray and set it aside (Fig. 4).

Fig.4 Step 10 - remove the pallet

Step 11: There is a pump on the heating block. It is necessary to disconnect the wires and unscrew the pump (Fig. 5).

Step 12: Test the rotation of the impeller, identify foreign objects and debris.

Step 13. Remove the rotor. Remove any detected blockage.

Step 14. Install the pump.

Step 15. Inspect the drain hose, its integrity and blockage. If there are pinched or worn areas, the hose should be replaced. If contamination is detected, remove and rinse.

Step 16. Assemble the machine in the appropriate order.

Step 17. Check functionality.

Fig.5. Disconnecting the wiring leading to the pump

In most cases, this sequence of actions leads to eliminating the problem and restoring the functionality of the dishwasher. But, if the malfunction is not resolved and error E22 does not disappear, the dishwasher is subject to a more thorough examination, and possibly expensive repairs.

When using low-temperature programs, for example, in order to save energy, the filter and lines become clogged with grease. Therefore, to prevent such contamination, after 3-4 cycles at low temperatures, a high-temperature program should be used to clean parts from grease deposits.

The washing program does not start. The machine does not turn off

In some situations, the dishwasher may not respond to commands or other user actions after being turned on. At the same time, it is not even possible to turn off the machine by pressing the corresponding button.

All this indicates that the control panel is faulty. The most likely is that a problem has been detected with the button contacts or with one of the control triacs. There is no need to rush to call a professional, because in most cases, you can solve the problem yourself.

In order to check and replace a triac, the user will need basic knowledge of the operating principle of semiconductor circuits, as well as the ability to use a multimeter and a soldering iron. Those who want to carry out repairs on the dishwasher with their own hands can do this according to the following list of actions:

  • Setting up the multimeter. The device is turned on and set to voltmeter mode, then the minimum value in volts is set. Next, the multimeter probes are connected to each other, and the operation of the device is checked.
  • Removing the control board. After turning off the power to the dishwasher, open its door. There are fasteners at the ends and on the inside that need to be unscrewed. The inside of the door can then be removed to reveal the desired control board.
  • Repairing the control board. Having found the required triacs on the control board, you need to check their serviceability one by one with a multimeter. Once a faulty component is detected, it will need to be unsoldered and removed. Taking the extracted part as a sample, you should purchase a similar one for subsequent replacement.
  • Soldering. Carefully, so as not to damage the tracks, you need to solder a new part to replace the old one.

For those who perform such an operation for the first time, you should refer to the photo above, where the arrow indicates one of the triacs.

The washing program is stuck

Various errors can occur during operation of the dishwasher, and the most common problem is the washing program freezing. As a result, the user may need to reload the dishwasher. Most errors have their own codes (for example, error code i30, e4, e03, e09 and others), the interpretation of which can be easily found in the manual, and brief information is displayed directly on the screen.

System failures are described in the control module program, this includes the program of the popular Bosch dishwasher. This allows self-diagnosis and alerts the user about various problems. Often the error that occurs does not disappear even if the device is rebooted or turned off and then on. The only solution to such a problem is to determine the cause and completely eliminate it.

The program freezing error can be caused by a variety of reasons. However, this often happens when the user does not perform regular cleaning and maintenance. As a result, the filters can become clogged, then the sensors are triggered, and the control module can block the operation of all machine components. This will continue until the blockage is completely cleared.

It happens that during operation a certain number of errors of various types accumulate. They are insignificant and do not interfere with operation, but after a certain time the machine may begin to malfunction or may not start on the first try, which can lead to serious breakdowns in the future.

Those who are wondering how to reset accumulated errors should press a certain combination of buttons and perform some actions.

First, the user opens the dishwasher door and turns on the device itself. Next, program buttons 1+3 are simultaneously pressed and held for three seconds, and then the door closes. Then the door opens again, and the dishwasher is turned off from the network, then turned on again. Now press and hold the reset button for three seconds. The door closes again and the user waits for the signal to finish washing. After receiving the signal, the door opens and the machine turns off.

Video on cleaning the dishwasher filter

Our short video will show you what you need to do to clean the filter in your dishwasher.

Grasp the protruding part of the filter and turn it according to the arrows, then pull it up and remove it completely from the wash chamber. In most models, the filter consists of several parts: a perforated metal plate, a frame and a cylindrical mesh filter. Disconnect all parts of the filter (by pressing the special latches) and rinse thoroughly under running water. If necessary, use a cleaning brush and a few drops of dishwashing detergent to clean the dishwasher strainer. After cleaning, connect all the filter parts in the reverse order, install the filter in place and do not forget to fix it by turning it in the direction of the arrows on the filter itself.
