A snow-white bra is a classic version of underwear that goes with any outfit.
However, it tends to quickly lose its impeccable appearance due to improper washing. We’ll figure out how to do this correctly in order to preserve the whiteness of the product for a long time.
We'll tell you in this article how to wash a white bra at home, either manually or using a washing machine.
Washing options
A white bra can be washed either manually or using an automatic washing machine. The latter option is only possible if certain conditions are met. You will find a lot of useful information about washing bras here.
In the washing machine
Machine washing is preferable to hand washing as it is less labor intensive. Before putting snow-white underwear into the drum, prepare it:
each product is fastened to all available couplings;- if there are push-up inserts, they are removed;
- sorted separately from colored items (washing white and colored items together is prohibited);
- Place the bra in a special washing bag or container-sphere, which will not allow the product to deform.
Then set the washing machine panel to a delicate mode at a temperature not exceeding 30 ᵒC, with the mandatory shutdown of the spin cycle. The tag on the bra, on which the manufacturer gives recommendations for care, will help you determine the mode and temperature.
Then pour liquid detergent or a detergent special for washing underwear into the compartment (
it is not advisable to use powder - it is difficult to rinse out ).
It is better to load bras into the washing machine with light items (swimming trunks, tank tops, socks).
Manually
It is safer to wash bras by hand, since this way it is possible to maintain its original shape even with frequent washing. This type of washing is especially recommended for items made of thin, lace and delicate fabrics.
The algorithm of actions is as follows:
Fill the container with warm water and dissolve a gentle detergent (gel, shampoo or special liquid) in it. You can add a little bit of any essential oil for aroma.- First, soak the bra for 20-30 minutes. If the product is very worn, you can leave it for an hour. It is better to rub the visible stains on the fabric with a washcloth or soft brush.
- Then they proceed directly to washing without applying much effort, so that the foam easily appears through the material. You will have to rub the straps harder, since they accumulate the most dirt.
- Upon completion of the procedure, the product is thoroughly rinsed under cool tap water. Repeat as many times as possible until soap impurities no longer come out of the fabric.
Bras should not be squeezed out by twisting . They simply hang them on a clothesline and wait for the excess water to drain. Read about hand washing bras here.

You should not soap the product, hoping to get rid of dirt faster; it is better to place it in a soap solution for a quarter of an hour. You shouldn't rub your bra too much. After soaking, the item of underwear should be thoroughly rinsed under running warm water. If you do not have the time or opportunity to read the entire article, watch the video on this topic:
Nowadays, when every home has an automatic washing machine, many housewives have abandoned hand washing and resorted to the help of a home assistant.
Automatic washing is also acceptable, you just need to follow a number of recommendations.
- Before washing, you need to fasten all the hooks on the laundry and place it in a special bag, which was invented specifically for washing delicate items.
- The recommended washing temperature is 30-40 degrees; at higher temperatures, synthetic items can become irreversibly deformed.
- White items should be washed separately from colored items.
- Preference should be given to liquid detergents. Unlike dry ones, they do not leave soapy streaks on the laundry, which, in direct contact with delicate skin, can cause allergic reactions.
- It is better to turn off the spin function in the machine. To remove excess moisture from a thing, you need to wrap it in a clean towel and gently blot it. Do not twist bras, especially if they have foam or underwire inserts.
- It is better to dry your clothes outside, of course, if there is no dusty road near your house.
Before washing, you should carefully study the manufacturer's recommendations, which are located on the product label.
An invisible bra, as well as something with silicone and push-up, can only be washed by hand. Such items are dried in a horizontal position, having first carefully straightened the cups.
How to bleach your bra at home?
Many people prefer to use folk remedies for whitening, which are no worse in effectiveness than industrial household chemicals, but safer.
Let's look at the most productive ones that will help restore a gray or yellowed bra to its original whiteness.
Soda and salt
First they try basic soaking. To do this, dissolve in 5 liters of warm water:
- 4 tbsp. l. baking soda;
- 3 tbsp. l coarse salt;
- 1-2 tbsp. l. washing powder with bleaching properties.
Immerse the bra in the resulting solution and leave for half an hour. After this, it is rinsed and washed as usual.
When receiving the solution, you must mix it thoroughly until the bulk ingredients are completely dissolved. Otherwise, remaining particles may damage the delicate fabric of the product.
Ammonia to make the color whiter
This product can be freely purchased at any pharmacy. It is used to whiten cotton underwear.
Instructions:
- Dilute alcohol in water at the rate of 40 ml per liter.
- Place the bra in the solution and leave for 10 hours.

Basic Rules and Precautions
Before washing a white bra, you need to carefully study the label on the product. Conscientious manufacturers indicate the temperature and mode on it and give recommendations. The additional tag, which is usually peeled off, may contain important information about how to effectively bleach laundry without harming the fabric.
General rules for washing bras:
- A white bra should be washed more often than a colored one - after every second wearing.
- You need to make sure that the hooks are fastened, the straps are straightened, and the bones do not pierce the fabric (in this case it is better to remove them).
- Do not wash with colored laundry - only with white.
- Recommended water temperature is 30-40 ˚С.
- You need to use special powders or gels for delicate white linen.
- When washing by hand, you should not squeeze the product too much - you need to soak it in water with a cleanser, then rinse under the tap.
- For washing in the machine, a delicate cycle and special covers are used - they protect the fabrics from tears.
If the fabric does turn yellow, you need to use bleach. Preference should be given to a product that does not contain chlorine. It will easily restore the lost whiteness, but will reduce the strength of the bra during subsequent wear. You can use home methods that do not require the purchase of special products.
A white bra needs to be washed after every second wearing.
Cannot be washed with colored laundry
Recommended water temperature - 30-40 ˚С
Use products for delicate whites
When washing by hand, soak the bra in water with detergent and rinse under the tap.
For machine washing, use the delicate cycle and special covers.
Processing features for various types of fabrics
When washing and bleaching white underwear, it is important to consider the type of fabric from which it is made.
Most bras are made from delicate material, so they require a special approach. A more detailed list of possible actions is specified on the attached label.
There are certain prohibitions regarding synthetic products:
- cannot be washed in hot water;
- do not use chlorine-containing bleaches.
Chlorine bleaches are not contraindicated for cotton bras, but they should be used with caution. Otherwise, the fabric can quickly become thin and become unusable.
Lace and guipure
Lace and guipure bras have an expensive look and are made from thin, expensive fabrics. Therefore, they need more careful handling.
It is especially important to choose the right detergent and bleaching agent - they should not contain chlorine . It is better to first test it for compatibility by applying it to an invisible area of the fabric.
In such a situation, the best option would be ammonia and hydrogen peroxide or laundry soap. They more carefully remove grayish and yellow plaque from the fabric. Salt and soda and boiling will not work.
It should also be noted that lace and guipure underwear must be processed exclusively by hand . Lace and guipure should be washed only in cool water. Otherwise, the products will shrink.
Synthetics
You can bleach synthetic bras using the same methods as lace bras. But sometimes it is acceptable to use salt and soda.
Before bleaching clothes, they are first washed and then placed in an appropriate solution.
Cotton
Cotton bodices are restored to crystal whiteness in the following ways:
Boiling. In a large enamel saucepan, bring water to a boil and add 200 grams of grated laundry soap.
The bra is immersed there and boiled for half an hour, not forgetting to constantly stir with a wooden spatula.Then rinse in cold water. If the product has been lying among things for a long time and has acquired a grayish tint, then add 50 ml of ammonia to the soap solution.
- Soaking with bleach . Dissolve 60 ml of bleach (chlorine is possible) and a little washing powder in 3 liters of warm water. Soak the laundry and leave for 30 minutes. Then rinse alternately in warm and cool water.
- Blue. According to the instructions on the package, prepare a solution into which the laundry is placed for 20-25 minutes. Then the product is rinsed and dried.
Bleaching rules depending on fabric
In order for the procedure to be effective, you need to know how to bleach white linen of different types of fabrics: natural (cotton) and artificial (guipure, lace, synthetics).
Suitable for natural fibers: digestion, removal with whiteness, blue, baking soda with salt, oxygen bleaches. Suitable for artificial fibers: vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, oxygen bleaching compounds. Let's look at the use of each type in more detail.
Important! Liquid boric acid or powder is suitable for bleaching any type of laundry.
Cotton
You can boil yellowness from a cotton bra using the following method:
- For an enamel pan, the bottom is covered with a cotton sheet, diaper, etc.
- Water is poured in and grated laundry soap (half a piece) is dropped in.
- The product is placed in the mixture and brought to a boil.
- Bubbling solution 30 min. stir with a wooden spatula.
- Take out the laundry and rinse it with cool water.
To blue the product, do the following:
- A solution of blue and cold water is made.
- Then the item is put down for half an hour.
- Rinse in cool water.
Made from synthetics
Good ways to whiten synthetics and freshen the look are baking soda and vinegar:
- Leave 2 tbsp in a liter of water. table soda. The item is immersed in a container and left for 2 hours. and rinses.
- 2 tablespoons are poured into a glass of heated water. table vinegar, lower the product for 12 hours. and can be washed using any method.
Important! To make synthetic items white, you cannot use boiling water.
With guipure
An oxygen composition is well suited for cleaning guipure:
- The composition is diluted with room water according to the instructions.
- Leave the bra on for about an hour.
- Wash as usual.
Blue and ammonia (ammonia) are also suitable to make the product white.
With lace
For lace, it is permissible to use ammonia or soda with hydrogen peroxide. A vinegar solution is also effective:
- In 2l. pour a glass of 9% acetic acid into warm water.
- The bra is lowered and soaked for 10 hours. until 12 noon
- Washable by hand or machine.
How to remove yellow sweat stains?
It is quite easy to remove sweat stains using laundry soap. Wet the bra, rub it with a bar of soap and rinse it after half an hour. An analogue could be Antipyatin soap.
However, old stains can only be removed with strong chemical bleaches:
- optical;
- oxygen;
- chlorine.
The choice depends on the fabric from which the bra is made.
Oxygen stain removers are considered universal stain removers and bleaches. They can be used both in the washing machine and for hand washing.
Suitable for any fabric, so you don't have to worry about ruining the item. To achieve the maximum possible effect, follow the instructions on the package.
You can clean the bodice this way:
- Mix ammonia, tartaric and citric acid in a ratio of 5:5:2.
- The resulting slurry is applied locally to the dirt and rubbed in for 5 minutes.
- After this, the product is washed in a machine or by hand.
Aspirin washes off sweat stains well. Crush 2 tablets and dissolve in cool water (100-120 ml). The resulting solution is used to treat problem areas on the fabric.
Anti-pollution
It is easier to deal with a gray or yellow tint than to remove yellow sweat stains from underwear. Sweat leaves unsightly streaks, eats into the straps and spoils the overall appearance of your bra and panties. No less annoying are faded spots of purple, pink or yellowish color. Stains must be removed locally, focusing specifically on dirt. Simple bleach is not enough: the product acts completely on the product and, at best, will lighten the stain. Therefore, it is necessary to choose an effective method for each type of stain.
Yellow stains
Household products will help remove yellow stains from your bra and panties.
- Boric acid. Pour two tablespoons of acid into 4 liters of water. Soak the clothes for two hours and rinse.
- Laundry soap. Soak items in cold water for two hours, and then wash problem areas with 72% natural soap. Fill the laundry with hot water, lather and leave for one hour. Wash and rinse things.
- Potassium permanganate. In a washing basin, dilute potassium permanganate to obtain a pale pink solution (approximately 200 g per 10 liters of water). Soak the laundry and cover the container with cling film. When the water has cooled, rinse your items.
For cotton undies, you can combine soap and bleach. First, the stain is soaped and left for 15 minutes. Afterwards, the laundry is washed with the addition of bleach.
If you still haven’t succeeded in bleaching your white panties and bra from yellow stains, or the fabric requires a more delicate approach, you can use citric acid spot-on. The procedure is performed in four steps. It can be repeated, but not immediately, but after the laundry has dried.
- Dissolve one teaspoon of acid in a glass of water.
- Apply the solution to the stains.
- Leave for one hour.
- Wash your clothes with soap or powder.

Stubborn stains
It is more difficult to remove old yellow stains from a bra or panties. If, after numerous washes with bleach, stains still remain on the clothing, the item may not be repairable. However, it is worth trying acid, alcohol and dish gel.
- Aspirin. Soak the laundry in soapy water. Dissolve the product (two tablets) in a small amount of water and apply to the yellow spots. Leave the clothes for two to three hours, rinse and wash.
- Salt and ammonia. Dissolve alcohol and salt (a teaspoon each) in a glass of water and soak the stain with the solution. Leave for a few minutes and rinse.
- Detergent. Suitable for all types of fabric. Mix half a tablespoon of dishwashing gel with a spoon of baking soda powder. Rub the product into dirty areas with a brush, leave for two to three hours and rinse.
As a last resort, you can try a recipe with denatured alcohol. It is better to experiment on a cotton bra - delicate fabrics may not withstand the action of the solvent. Mix a small amount of denatured alcohol with the yolk to form a thick mass. Apply to stain and let dry. Cut off the resulting crust with a nail file or soak it with a swab containing glycerin. Wash it. If after this the stains have not given up, it means that the linen can no longer be saved.
Faded fabric
It is quite difficult to wash a faded white bra, especially if it has already dried and had time to lie down. The problem should be solved immediately after it is discovered, while the laundry is still damp. There are several ways to get rid of faded stains.
- Soap mass. Mix soap shavings, starch and citric acid (a tablespoon each), add half a glass of salt. Dilute the resulting dry mixture with enough water to form a paste. Apply to the stain and leave for 12 hours, then rinse thoroughly.
- Mustard powder. Suitable for silk. Dilute a tablespoon of powder in 1 liter of water and leave to infuse for one hour. Drain the water into the wash basin and repeat the procedure until you have enough water. Wash your clothes in mustard water as usual.
- Peroxide. Add a tablespoon of peroxide and soda powder to 2 liters of water. Stir the resulting mixture and heat to 70°C (be careful not to boil). Soak the clothes in the heated solution for ten minutes. The laundry must be turned over constantly. Rinse and dry.
When choosing a cleaning method, you should focus on the structure of the material. Dense cotton fabrics can withstand chemicals and high temperatures. It is better not to subject synthetic and silk items to aggressive cleaning methods.
How to dry?
It is important not only to wash the bra correctly, but also to dry it so that it does not lose its original shape.
Professional advice will help with this:
- It is better to dry clothes in the fresh air or in a well-ventilated room;
- it is preferable to hang the bra on a clothesline, but do not use clothespins for fixation, or on a hanger;
- you can lay out the bodice immediately after the water has drained from it, on a terry towel;
- It is not advisable to resort to machine drying, but as a last resort, set the “no heat” mode (if available).
You cannot dry white underwear on a radiator, which is guaranteed to ruin its appearance.
Rules of care
During wear, white clothes lose color, turn yellow or gray. This happens due to friction, sweat and contact with dark things. Simple but effective recommendations will help you “fix” the color and extend the life of a white bra:
- Underwear is stored separately from other things. It is advisable to allocate a spacious drawer for it, since bras cannot be wrinkled. If they lie haphazardly, the cup will become deformed. To avoid this, place a ball of crumpled paper under your bra. Dark and light things are placed as far apart as possible.
- The bra retains its elasticity thanks to special fibers, but if it is not washed for more than 3-4 days, it will stretch and lose its shape. The thing is that sweat and sebum exert additional stress, and the fibers deteriorate.
- Do not wear dark clothes over a light-colored bra, because as a result, gray pills and abrasions will form on it and it will be hopelessly damaged.
- No matter how much you would like to restore the whiteness of your bra, avoid prolonged soaking, longer than 30 minutes. Prolonged contact with water leads to the fact that the color loses its former brightness, the enamel on the fittings cracks, and the metal rusts.
- If you're short on time, drying on a radiator seems like a great idea. But that's not true. High temperatures damage delicate items, so it is better to avoid using an iron.
- Do not put on your bra until the deodorant has dried. When wet, it leaves marks on clothes that are difficult to wash off.
- Make sure your bra is dry before putting it in the drawer, as moisture encourages mildew to grow.
You can’t do without white underwear if you have light-colored items in your closet. Besides, a white bra is always beautiful, especially on a tanned body. But over time, it wears out, loses color and becomes covered with yellow spots. Fortunately, with the help of proven recipes, you can quickly wash a piquant wardrobe item and return it to its whiteness.
Useful tips
In order not to make a mistake with the method and mode of washing a white bra, it is recommended that you read the information from the manufacturer on the tag. The drawings will tell you how to properly care for the product.
Additionally, a number of recommendations regarding washing and bleaching are taken into account:
- It is unacceptable to use chlorine-containing bleaches on synthetic bras;
- It is not recommended to add conditioner, which leads to loss of elasticity of the straps;
- bodices with metal underwires are not soaked for a long time, as the metal can rust and leave unsightly red marks on the fabric;
- when washing in an automatic machine, it is better to remove the metal inserts, since they can fall out and damage the drum;
- When drying, you should not turn the cups inside out, which leads to their deformation;
- Such delicate products should not be rubbed with a rag or a stiff brush, nor should alcohol be used for cleaning.
Housewives' recommendations for whitening
To avoid an irreparable situation with a good thing, follow a few tips:
- read the instructions and recommendations before using the products;
- Try to use new chemical liquids and gels in an inconspicuous area, so that if something happens you don’t completely damage the product;
- bleach your underwear starting from pre-washing. If it doesn’t work and the grayness remains, then increase the strength of the products gradually from soft to strong;
- all store and home procedures are carried out with gloves;
- Some detergent compositions may cause allergies, so read reviews before use.
These simple home techniques can effectively remove annoying grayness and yellowness. For a visual example, watch the video tutorial on stain removal:
Questions and answers
How to dry your bra correctly?
To prevent the bra from becoming deformed, you need to dry it flat out on a horizontal surface. As a last resort, the bra is hung by the bridge between the cups, but not by the straps. For quick drying, you can use a radiator and a dryer (rack). It is forbidden to dry products with a hot jet of a hair dryer or an iron. Bras should not be twisted. Excess moisture can be removed with a terry towel (gently blot the bodice).
How to care for underwear?
Proper care of your laundry will eliminate the need to bleach it. You need to change your bras every 2-3 days, and do not let them “stale” - wash them immediately. It is better to use liquid detergents for washing. They don't clog the fabric. If the tag is cut off and lost, the water is heated to 30 degrees. It is also important to wear white bras only under light-colored clothing, and wash them separately from colored and dark-colored items. Underwear should be stored in a separate drawer.
Whitening your bra at home is a simple matter. The product is soaked for some time and then washed. There are many products, both folk and commercial, that perfectly remove traces of sweat and return fabric to its original color. The main thing when choosing the appropriate method and means is to pay attention to the information on the tag. By following the manufacturer's recommendations, you will get the result you were waiting for - the bra will take on a fresh look, without losing its firmness and elasticity.
Basic methods
There are several ways to bleach your bra if it has turned yellow. There are three main methods:
- soaking before washing;
- boiling;
- adding bleach during washing.
The choice of bleaching method depends on the characteristics of the fabric, the duration of wear and the degree of color loss.
The most delicate way to return your bra to its original appearance is to pre-soak it. The bra is immersed in water with washing powder or washing gel for 1–2 hours. This allows you to remove traces of sweat, which give things a yellowish color. The method is suitable for all types of fabric and all types of washing. Doesn't cope well with stubborn stains.
The second way to bleach a bra is by boiling. The method removes stubborn dirt, but can damage the fabric, ruin fasteners, causing rusty stains on the surface. The bra is immersed in a pan of hot water and boiled for half an hour to 2 hours. The method is recommended for products made from natural fabrics with a minimum number of inserts. The push-up may lose its shape, and the metal parts may rust and become deformed. It is not at all suitable for situations where you need to bleach a synthetic bra, since this material cannot be boiled.
If you need to do without boiling and soaking, then washing with special compounds is suitable. For this purpose, powders are used, including delicate ones, as well as bleaches added separately. You need to choose one that is suitable for delicate fabrics, always without chlorine.

Special ready-made products
The best way to bleach laundry is by using ready-made solutions. The departments of household chemicals offer products for any budget. These can be powders for light-colored clothes, combined with bleach, or whiteness separately. They are available in different types, suitable for hand and machine wash. Recommended use:
- Chlorine-containing products are based on sodium hypochlorite. Their advantages: high efficiency and low cost, disadvantages: significant reduction in fabric strength. Synthetics suffer more, but chlorine is not beneficial for natural materials either.
- Optical - contain small reflective particles that remain in the fabric after rinsing. The advantage is that the structure of the material does not suffer, the disadvantage is that it does not in any way affect the real cleanliness of things.
- Oxygen - contain sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate. In water it breaks down into soda and hydrogen peroxide. It is less effective than chlorine bleach, but is more gentle on bra fabric.
How to wash a white bra at home is a question that every housewife will answer differently. According to the majority, it is best to use oxygen industrial compounds. They are often combined with optical components in one product - this is effective and safe for fabric. Chlorine-containing products for underwear are harmful - this will wear out your bra faster.

Features of washing a white bra
Bras cannot be washed like regular items. These delicate products require more careful care. Manufacturers recommend hand washing, which does not deform the “bones” and does not stretch the cups of the bra. If washing is carried out in an automatic machine, then it is necessary to use special washing bags, which are also designed to protect the product from damage and follow the following recommendations:
- Items that are not heavy should be washed together with your bra. These could be panties, tank tops or T-shirts. Thus, there will be no periodic excesses in the drum, which negatively affects not only the condition of the machine, but also things;
- Before loading the product into the drum, you need to fasten the bra clasps. This way the bra can be protected from damage;
- Washing should be carried out in a gentle mode (“delicate wash” or similar);
- Foam inserts (if any) must first be removed and washed by hand;
- It is prohibited to spin the product in the machine, so you must select the “No spin” mode.
It is worth noting that today manufacturers are increasingly using artificial fabrics for sewing underwear. Synthetics wash well and can withstand exposure to numerous bleaches and other stain removers. If you do manage to find a bra made of natural fabric, then you will have to be more careful in cleaning it from dirt. In this case it is not recommended:
- use chlorine bleaches;
- machine washable.
