How to wash sheepskin, basic principles of caring for clothes with sheepskin

Sheepskin is a wonderful warm and natural material for sewing clothes and beautiful interior items. It is used to make winter hats and sheepskin coats, shoes, soft and warm car seats, as well as a variety of bedspreads, capes and rugs that add comfort to any interior. However, the light color of the coat and the fur itself require special care for these things. Therefore, many are interested in the question of how to wash sheepskin and whether it can be done.

Over time, sheepskin products accumulate large amounts of dirt and dust. Not only harmful bacteria, but also dust mites can develop in large numbers on them. The fur item loses its appearance, the wool fades and loses its original color. Unmaintained and dirty sheepskin begins to emit an unpleasant odor. Contact with such things is not safe for humans. Pathogenic bacteria, mold spores, dust and microscopic dust mites can cause severe allergic reactions in humans. Therefore, such natural fur products must be washed and cleaned in a timely manner.

Sheepskin can be washed by hand or in a washing machine.

Basic rules of care

Any item made of sheepskin will look attractive only if it is properly cared for:

  • Sheepskin skins laid on the floor, chairs or beds should be shaken out well. This is done to prevent deep penetration of dust,
  • One sheep's fur is cleaned every seven days with a vacuum cleaner. This procedure removes dust and straightens lint,
  • When cleaning a sheepskin rug, it is recommended to pay attention to the base of the skin,
  • Washing such a product in a washing machine should be done monthly. Please note that the material is of natural origin, and if it is not washed, after a while it begins to emit characteristic odors.

In addition to the above measures, sheepskin owners will have to use techniques that help restore the elasticity and softness of the product. Even at the time of purchasing sheepskin, you should realize that there will be constant costs for washing and manual cleaning of sheepskin, including for eliminating odors.

Basic methods of processing sheepskin

The easiest way to care for products made from natural materials is to go to the dry cleaner. However, you can independently delve into the topic of how to wash sheepskin at home. In most cases, you can get by with dry care altogether.

Dry cleaning

Already from the name it is clear that dry cleaning excludes the use of water or any other liquids. This is a gentle way to get rid of dirt, restore the product’s whiteness or color saturation, and overcome unpleasant odors. The following substances are most often recommended for the procedure:

Starch perfectly absorbs odors and excess moisture. In addition, it envelops the fur, restoring its shine and elasticity. Any starch is suitable for cleaning: potato, corn, wheat. The powder is applied in a dense layer to the surface of the product and left for 15-30 minutes. For intense contamination, the procedure can be extended for several hours. After the specified time, the starch is shaken off with a special brush or soft cloth.

Baking soda has a pronounced whitening effect. It should be used for white or light colored skins. Baking soda is poured onto the natural fur and left for 30 minutes. To get the best results, you can gently rub baking soda into the depths of the skin. Then the powder is shaken out and the residue is removed with a cloth.

Coarse table salt will do a great job with greasy stains and faded color. It is used in a similar way to starch and soda: poured onto the skin, waited for a certain time, and then removed with a soft bristle brush. It is noteworthy that salt also disinfects the product.

In order to lift the fur and restore its freshness and shine, you should purchase any bran. The most commonly used product is made from oats. The bran is first heated in a frying pan, poured hot onto natural material and left until it cools completely. The product is shaken out and the fur is cleaned with a soft comb.

Wet cleaning

To remove stubborn stains, use wet cleaning. The following tools are suitable:

  • Hydrogen peroxide. This inexpensive pharmaceutical liquid brightens sheepskin products and removes dirt. Peroxide is applied to a cotton pad, and then the fur is gently wiped until completely clean. After drying, the product is combed or smoothed.
  • Lemon juice. Fights unpleasant odors, yellowness, and greasy conditions. You can use fresh juice or citric acid solution. The liquid is also applied with a damp cloth, then the natural sheepskin is dried.

It should be remembered that you need to avoid getting substances on the inside. Only the fibers themselves should be wiped.

How to wash sheepskin in an automatic washing machine

Washing sheep fur in a washing machine is permitted when the product is placed in a drum. Items that are large in size, and which are therefore not very convenient to wash, are cleaned using the dry method or dry-cleaned.

It is important to remember that sheepskin with dyed pile is not machine washable.

Before washing in the machine, the product is checked for contamination. If stains of grease, ketchup or chocolate, sticking of chewing gum and other “delights” are detected, first clean it by hand, and only then put the item in the washing machine. True, until this moment, the sheep's fur is well shaken out of small debris or vacuumed.

Remember that synthetic machine washing powders or detergents containing chlorine or bleach cannot wash natural wool items. It is recommended to wash with liquid detergents for wool or delicate materials. Air conditioning is not used . Washing in the machine takes place in the “Wool”, “Delicate”, “Hand Wash” modes; the water temperature should not exceed forty degrees. The spin cycle is performed in a washing machine at six hundred revolutions. If sheepskin items are heavily soiled, it is recommended to repeat the rinsing procedure by entering an additional function into the machine’s memory.

After washing, the sheepskin is removed from the washing machine, carefully straightened and laid out on a flat surface with the fur facing up. While the skin is drying, it should be shaken and stretched from time to time. Drying on a radiator or using heating equipment is strictly prohibited.

Dried sheep fur should be combed with a hard bristle brush.

What to do if the sheepskin becomes stiff after washing

If after washing, rinsing and drying the sheepskin has become hard, then it is urgently necessary to revive it. To do this, you should prepare a softening composition. You need to take one tablespoon each of baby cream and glycerin (sold at the pharmacy) and mix them with a glass of water. This mixture should be treated with the inner part of the sheep skin. The product should be left to soak and soften for 30 minutes, after which it will become soft.

Some housewives use sunflower oil, animal fat, and fat-based creams to soften sheepskin.

If all procedures for washing sheepskin were done correctly, the product has every chance of maintaining an attractive appearance for a long time, even after several washes.
