How to replace the heating element on a Bosch washing machine: where is it located, how to remove the water heater

Bosch washing machines have been in great demand among consumers all over the world for many years. The popularity of the German manufacturer is due to the durability and reliability of its products. Like many other products from this manufacturer, Bosch washing machines have a simple design, thereby ensuring maximum product reliability.

The devices are also equipped with rich functionality. Therefore, they satisfy the requirements of most consumers. But no matter how durable the products are, sooner or later their parts are still subject to wear.

And the device itself requires maintenance and repair. Some repairs occur due to long-term use of the device, while some breakdowns occur due to unfavorable conditions of use of the product. Using low-quality water for washing contributes to the accumulation of scale deposits on machine parts. Because of this, replacing the heating element on a Bosch washing machine is a common repair.

Signs of a heating element malfunction are a cold hatch, and, accordingly, water during washing.

The heating element for a Bosch washing machine can be replaced with the help of a specialist. But you can do it yourself at home. You can find out how much it costs to change the heating element of a Bosch washing machine at any workshop in your region.

If you decide to change the heating element of your Bosch washing machine yourself, it is advisable to purchase a new part in advance. To buy the right heater, just tell the seller the model of the washing machine.

Causes of heating element failure

If you wash only with cold water, then neither the TEN itself nor its repair would be needed. This element heats the water to the desired temperature - it is set by the program or chosen by the user himself. Without a hot wash, you won’t be able to wash your clothes properly. Due to the characteristics of the material, design and operating conditions, the heater has a limited service life, on average 3–5 years. Repair of the heating element in a washing machine may be necessary due to:

  • Natural wear and tear. The element, heating and cooling, operates under extreme conditions, reducing its operating time.
  • The influence of poor quality water. The harder the water, the more dissolved salts it contains, the more intensively scale forms during heating. An element covered with a layer of sediment gives off heat with difficulty. As the layer increases, the problem increases, and eventually the heater burns out.
  • Voltage fluctuations. Voltage surges can cause a short circuit. As a result of a short circuit, the heater circuit breaks and a breakdown occurs on the housing.
  • Triac combustion - it is located in the electronic module. The task of the triac is to control the operation of the heating element, and if it breaks, there will be no signal about operation.

Worn and new heating elements of a washing machine

To extend the service life of the element responsible for heating water, it is recommended:

  • When washing, use special products to soften hard water.
  • Place a filter at the entrance to the SMA.

How to increase the service life of a heating element

In order for the heater to serve for a long time it is necessary:

  • Do not overuse frequent long-term washing at high temperatures. The latest detergents provide greater efficiency in removing contaminants even at low water temperatures.
  • Strong and frequent heat treatment negatively affects things;
  • Monitor the quality of water and detergents used for washing. If necessary, install filters that soften it;
  • Perform periodic maintenance to remove possible accumulated deposits in the device. This prevention will be useful for many other parts and components of your product. And the buildup of grease and scale can leave an unpleasant odor in your clothes.

Signs of a broken heating element in a washing machine

Regardless of what Bosch model you have - Bosch Maxx 5, Bosch Maxx 4, Bosch Classixx 5 or any other, the symptom of a heater malfunction is the same - cold water.

To verify the problem, 20 minutes after the start of the cycle, touch the glass hatch with your palm. You will feel whether the glass is warm or not. Cold will indicate a heating problem.

Cold washing is not able to provide high-quality washing of clothes. Dirt is not removed 100% and a musty smell appears. If the self-diagnosis system alerts you to a problem by showing code F19, prepare for the fact that you may need to replace the heating element in your Bosch washing machine.

Installing a new heating element on a Bosch washing machine

Replacing the heating element of the Bosch Maxx 6 washing machine (maxx 5, maxx4...) with a new one is done in the reverse order, first:

  1. After making sure that the parts being replaced are similar. They must match the size and power rating;
  2. Remove the finger temperature sensor from the old one and install it in the new heater. If necessary, descale the temperature sensor.
  3. When installing a new heater, the fastening nut should be tightened securely, but not overdo it.

All these models of washing machines of this brand have a removable front part of the body. It is very difficult to check the replaced part for water leakage by turning on the program.

The test can be done by filling the machine tank with about 10 liters of water in various ways.

Pour water through the loading hole and wait a little time. If no drops of water seep into the place where the part is attached, then the repair was successful. You can collect the product to continue its service to its owners.

Preparation for dismantling

Replacing a heating element in a Bosch SM is not the most difficult task. You can solve it yourself. What will you need? Tools, technical skills and patience, since disassembling an SMA is a slow and difficult task. Before changing the heating element in your Bosch washing machine, stock up on the following tools:

  • screwdrivers - flat and figured;
  • bit key;
  • Torex type bat - size 10 mm;
  • tester - measure resistance.

Buy a replacement part in advance. But take only the original heater. Tell the consultant the model of your washing machine, and he will select the appropriate option.

Replacing the heating element of Bosch Maxx washing machines

Replacing the heating element of a Bosch Maxx washing machine may become necessary for various reasons. Firstly, this is natural wear and tear during operation, which manifests itself with an increase in the number of washes, and secondly, the appearance of scale or limescale due to the use of hard water. In general, the service life of the heating element depends on the operating conditions of the washing machine.

Service life of the heating element

The manufacturer recommends replacing the heating element of Bosch Maxx 5 washing machines after an average of 5 years, with an average number of washes - 2-3 times a week. Of course, if you wash much more often and at higher temperatures, then the service life of the heating element is reduced; if you wash less often, then the shelf life, accordingly, increases. The same operating principles apply to Bosch Maxx 4 series machines.

Failure to promptly replace Bosch Maxx 4 (Bosch Maxx 5) heating elements can, over time, lead to failure of the entire electronic unit or control device combined with electronics. In this case, the cost of repairing the washing machine will increase significantly, because... Not only the heating element, but also more expensive elements will have to be repaired or, in extreme cases, replaced.

How to diagnose

You can check the cause of a malfunction of the heating element (heating element) for Bosch Maxx 5 series machines using electronic diagnostics (see the instructions for your washing machine). For washing machines of the Bosch Maxx 5 series, the screen will display the following error codes: F19, F20.

You can also verify the failure of the heating element (heating element) of washing machines of the Bosch Maxx 4 series using diagnostics (see the instructions for your washing machine). If the heating element fails, the machine will give you one of the pictures:

Water heating does not correspond to the program

Repair of heating elements (heating elements) of Bosch Maxx 4, 5 washing machines is carried out by calling a service technician to your home. It is not recommended to fix this breakdown yourself; this is due not only to the difficulty of dismantling the front panel and cover, but can also lead to the further appearance of new faults in the electronics.

One of the ways to prevent premature failure of heating elements can be to install an RCD (residual current device), which will operate in the event of a current leak, and will also notify you of which part needs to be replaced. This device cannot protect against wear of the heating elements, but will allow you to track the time of its scheduled replacement, which may occur later than the recommended replacement period.

There are cases when, with the installation of a protective shutdown, the heating elements of washing machines of the Bosch Maxx 4, 5 series served for about 10 years. Take care of your washing machine and contact the service center in time not only to troubleshoot problems, but also to prevent them in a timely manner.
