When it comes to replacing the pump in a Bosch, Ariston, Indesit, Electrolux or other brand dishwasher, the first thing you need to do is understand the design of the equipment. It is important to understand which part will have to be changed, because the drain pump and the circulation pump (motor) are different things. Let's take a closer look at the purpose of these elements in the dishwasher and the principles of their replacement.
How the mechanisms of dishwashers work
The operating principle of the technical device is quite simple:
- The built-in microprocessor reacts to the tightness of the closed door and activates the drain pump;
- When the water level in the pump is sufficient to wash a certain amount of dishes, which is confirmed by a special sensor, the circulation pump comes into operation. It is this part that creates the necessary pressure inside the housing, causing the impeller to rotate;
- At the same time, the dispenser with soap solution opens, the heating element heats the water and the dishes are cleaned of dirt and food debris;
- The dirty water is drained and a new portion is poured in for rinsing. After this procedure, the water is drained, the contents are dried, and the sensor signals the end of the machine’s operation.
Operating principle of PMM
The circulation pump is used to pump water into the systems. It constantly works, pumping and delivering water to the rocker arms, from where it flies out under high pressure. The detergent dispenser immediately opens and food residues are washed into the tray, from where they fall into the filter. The waste water is purified again and supplied to the nozzles. Therefore, the pump is also called a recirculation pump.
A common cause of breakdown of the recirculation unit is a leak. Water gets on the bushings, washes away the lubricant, which leads to their wear.
The pump drains waste water, removing it outside the bunker. After the end of the cycle, the control board gives it a signal to pump out. The impeller is considered the most vulnerable point. Hair and threads often wrap around it, blocking the operation of the mechanism, so it is important to carry out periodic cleaning.
When does the pump need repair?
The dishwasher works, but the water does not circulate after washing, the dishes are not washed. At the same time, you can hear the engine humming. First of all check:
- Inlet filters - if clogged, they are washed under pressure from the tap;
- Injectors - remove the rocker arms from their seats and check their holes; if they are clogged, take a toothpick and clean out the passages.
If the water in the machine does not heat up and the flow heating element is in order, then the engine must be replaced.
Is the drain pump in the Candy or Zanussi PMM constantly running and does not turn off? There may be several reasons:
- Problems with the electronic board or wiring. The pump triac may be malfunctioning, or the wires may be damaged and do not transmit a shutdown signal.
- The pressure switch is malfunctioning. The level sensor monitors the amount of water in the tank, after which it sends a signal to the board to stop supplying. If the sensor transmits incorrect readings indicating that there is still water left in the hopper, the pump does not turn off.
- The dishwasher is not installed level. For example, Electrolux models are very sensitive to tilts of more than two degrees.
- Incorrect connection to the sewer leads to a siphon effect. The waste flows back into the machine and the pump has to pump it out.
- The pump itself broke.
The PMM engine and its components cannot be repaired, so a complete replacement will be required. When choosing replacement parts, consider the following factors:
- the real cost of components (the most expensive parts are considered to be for Bosch dishwashers);
- originality - the spare part must fit your dishwasher model.
In Bosch machines the pump is located next to the engine. Whereas in equipment of other brands (Hansa, Siemens) - from above.
Finding out the reasons for equipment failure
How can I check what happened? It’s very simple, if after drawing water the machine does not function, then the following has happened:
- The filter is clogged and needs to be replaced;
- Residues of food got into the nozzle holes and clogged them. To fix this, you need to clean the injectors;
- The circulation pump has failed. This breakdown does not happen often, and it can be identified by the characteristic silence after filling with water. A normally operating pump emits a quiet hum.
Causes of pump failure
Replacing a part in the device is easy. You can do this yourself without calling a specialist. The only thing you will need to do is purchase a new circulation pump that is suitable for your machine model. The most common brands on the market are Bosch, Ariston, Indesit, Beko, Electrolux and Hansa.
How to change the drain pump?
Let's start with the drainage tract. First you need to clean the system and inspect the impeller. Most of the problems are related to its blocking, so disassembling the entire case at once is “monkey work.”
- Open the PMM loading chamber door.
- Remove the dish trays from the hopper.
- There is a drain filter at the bottom.
Important! If the dishwasher stops with a full tank of water, remove it using the drain hose.
- Unscrew it. Depending on the brand of equipment, there is a mesh behind the filter. Also remove and clean it.
- Use a sponge to remove water from the hole. Remove the protective cover by pulling it towards you.
Bosch dishwashers
Bosch kitchen helpers are no less popular. So, in favor of this dishwasher, namely its latest versions, we can say the following:
- The presence of a large working space, which allows you to load one set of dishes more than in previous versions with identical dimensions.
- It is possible to place a separate basket for forks, spoons and other cutlery.
- A wide range of different functions, the ability to install more or less intensive washing in the lower section of the dishwasher - this is very convenient, because... You can load dirty dishes, such as pans, into the lower basket.
In most cases, a Bosch model dishwasher recirculation pump is easier to disassemble than to purchase a new one. First you need to remove the pump according to the standard procedure.
Bosch dishwasher circulation pump
Then we move on to disassembling the pump itself:
- separate the upper part of the recirculation device by turning it to the right;
- the lower element of the spare part is non-separable, so it should be moved to the side;
- we find broken plastic bushings on the disassembled part;
- the first sleeve is located at the “foot of the mushroom”, and the second is “inside the cap”. Please note that it is quite difficult to select identical bushings, so it is better to contact a mechanic for ceramic substitutes.
- Having disassembled the upper part of the mechanism, you need to clean the grease and dirt from its surface. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the part.
- at the last stage, you need to return the new bushings to their place and install the top of the pump to the non-separable lower part, which you previously set aside. At this point the repair work is completed.
Preparation
If the conversation turns to replacing the drain pump on an Ariston, Bosch, Candy, Electrolux or other brand dishwasher, then this means a pump or a circulation pump. In the first case, repair work is easy and not too expensive, but replacing a circulation device will cost much more, even if you do everything yourself.
Many people claim that a dishwasher can be repaired without using tools other than screwdrivers. But to be precise, you will need a multimeter, pliers and an awl.
Using pliers, you will tighten the fasteners that hold the machine pump. Use screwdrivers to loosen and then reinstall the fasteners. It is more convenient to use an awl to pry the body panel to remove it. Well, all measurements of resistance indicators are performed with a multimeter.
All that remains is to prepare the machine itself, for which the following activities are performed:
- the dishwasher is disconnected from the electrical network;
- the water supply is cut off;
- the decorative panel located at the bottom, immediately under the car door is removed;
- all hoses are disconnected from the body;
- the machine moves forward to make it more convenient to work;
- Before disconnecting the drain hose, you need to spread plastic film on the floor and large rags on top to absorb the remaining water.
Ariston dishwashing equipment
If the circulation pump for an Ariston dishwasher is broken, then to disconnect it you will need to lay the equipment on its side, remove the lower part of the bottom, disconnecting the latches. The next step is to disconnect the power cable and remove the broken part along with the fastener. After removal, you need to press your toes with your toes, with which the pump is held in the volute, and turn the part counterclockwise. Ready.
Circulation pump for Ariston dishwasher
In order to install a working central unit in place, you need to do all the previous operations in reverse order:
- Insert the device into the cochlea, turning it clockwise until it clicks;
- Install the finished structure in the old place and connect the power wire. The control wire also needs to be connected;
- The bottom with the pallet must be installed in its original position and the machine must be placed vertically.
Pre-repair disassembly of PMM for access to spare parts
In order to make repairs, you need to disassemble the equipment. For this purpose, we have highlighted a separate item.
Unplug it
Safety comes first!
Turn off the water supply to equipment
To do this, unscrew the water supply hose. Place a basin underneath, as liquid could remain in the tube.
If there is water left in the equipment, remove it using a drain tube
Water will interfere with your replacement, so it is better to get rid of it in advance.
Unscrew the back and top covers of the PMM
They are held on by bolts, a wrench can easily handle them.
Remove the drain filter
There may also be a mesh there. Remove that too.
Remove the protective cover and clean the impeller. Afterwards, assemble the equipment (do not screw the back and top covers)
If after this the machine does not work, then feel free to proceed to replacing the circulation pump. This is most likely the reason!
Repair of the circulation pump of the Indesit dishwasher
Typically, Indesit guarantees the quality of its products, so the cause of failure of the central heating unit may be clogged components of the element. In some cases, it is enough to simply wash the circulation pump for the Indesit dishwasher with detergent under warm running water and remove any remaining food and dirt from the holes. If this does not help, then try replacing the seals (rings and washers) with new ones.
It is extremely rare that parts of an element wear out. In this case, you will have to purchase a new part to replace the old one. You can replace the damaged part of the machine according to the previous schemes. The process is practically no different from the options discussed above. The same goes for Electrolux, Hansa and Beko dishwashers. The only important difference concerns the cost of the pump. Spare parts for this type of parts are much cheaper than for Bosch, Ariston and Indesit. The most expensive spare parts are for Bosch equipment.
Therefore, before replacing, it is worth checking the compatibility of parts. In some cases, you can use elements from other companies if they are completely the same in size.
Possible faults
When the pump fails, the performance of the dishwasher decreases. Possible malfunctions:
- leak due to wire deformation;
- pump breakdown leading to lack of water supply;
- clogged nozzles or filters;
- deterioration of pump performance.
The latter causes insufficient pressure in the water supply system. Many dishwasher owners contact service centers asking why the pump does not turn on or off.
Any deviations in the operation of the dishwasher must be corrected in a timely manner so that the equipment is constantly working. Otherwise, the device will quickly break down.
It is noteworthy that sometimes to repair equipment it is enough to forcibly turn off and turn on the pump.
Dishwasher drain and recirculation pumps
Functional differences
The task of the recirculation pump is to pump or pump out water and gas-air mixtures. For a dishwasher, it provides a continuous supply of water into the working chamber, spraying it through special devices for high-quality dishwashing. The water is then filtered, heated and pressurized again - these are the functions of the main engine of the machine.
When choosing a new circulation pump, each user should focus on the following important factors:
- real cost;
- compatibility with the model of household appliances installed in the house.
The dishwasher pump, which is located at the bottom of the unit, is responsible for draining waste water after all work is completed. On Bosch models it is located next to the circulation pump in one block, on others on top. It differs from the main pump in size, but their operating principle is identical, only the first circulates water inside the machine, and the second removes it into the sewer.
Design
Both pumps have almost the same design, but different dimensions and layout. Let's take a closer look at each detail and the principle of its operation.
Circulation pump
The quality of all modes of the machine depends on the stable operation of this device: water circulation while washing dishes is carried out using a dishwasher pump.
A heating element is inserted into its body - in modern household appliances they are usually of the flow type, i.e. instantaneous.
The circulation pump supplies water to the rocker nozzles, from where it escapes at a fairly high speed; the centrifugal force causes them to rotate and spray the water flow throughout the tank - a working container made of stainless material. All food debris is washed away under this pressure, the water flows to the bottom, where it is filtered, sucked into the tank and again supplied to the nozzles. Thus, there is a constant recirculation of the water flow in the machine.
Drain pump
The drain pump is responsible for removing waste water from the machine after the washing process is completed. The control module gives a signal, the pump turns on and the contaminated water is removed from the machine. Experts call the drain pump impeller a weak point - if it is blocked by a foreign object, it rotates on the shaft, and the device must be replaced: such a defect cannot be repaired.
Diagnosis of failure
Having basic technical knowledge, it is quite possible to independently determine the cause of failure of the dishwasher unit. If there is no water circulation in the machine, the coarse and fine filters are not clogged, and the nozzles on the rocker arms are clean, then this is a sure sign that it is time to replace the circulation motor - there can be no other options.
Important! The circulation motor cannot be repaired, but must be replaced.
When the water in a Bosch dishwasher does not heat up, the circulation pump must also be replaced, because it uses instantaneous elements to heat the water - they are not dismantled.
The most common reason for a drain pump to break down, not only on Bosch machines, but also on other products of a similar type, is the clogging of the drain filter along with the pump with foreign objects. The filter is easy to clean and is ready for use again, but with the pump, things are usually much worse - it needs to be replaced. To dismantle you will have to disassemble almost the entire machine; if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to call a specialist.
Replacement algorithms
So, in order to replace the recirculation pump for any dishwasher or drain pump, you need to disassemble the machine almost completely. To do this, you will need simple tools: a screwdriver or screwdriver, pliers, an awl and a considerable supply of enthusiasm and self-confidence.

Circulation pump
Replacing this unit is simple, but the user must know information about the internal structure of the assistant. Disassembly steps:
- open the loading door of the machine and remove all excess from the tank;
- carefully and carefully remove the rocker from the mounting location;
- remove the mesh glass of the coarse filter;
- unscrew the fasteners;
- remove the side panels and plastic fasteners;
- We remove the thermal insulation to the side so that it does not interfere with the work;
- for convenience, carefully turn the car upside down;
- disconnect the inlet hose and the tray with the units from the body;
- disconnect the wiring and drain hose;
- carefully remove the door fastenings - springs, disconnect the fill and drain hoses;
- carefully remove the pan so as not to damage the float;
- The pump block opened.
After this, all that remains is to remove the circulation pump and install a new unit. We carry out further actions in reverse order.
In stores, a new circulation pump with a flow-type heating element for a BOSCH machine can be purchased at a price of 4,107 rubles.
Step
- Remove the lower front access panel and strike plate. Using a wrench, remove the screws holding the front access panel and impact plate in place. Pull the access panel and strike plate towards you, then remove them and set them aside.
Additional items
A dishwasher contains more than just pumps in its design. Dishwashing equipment contains entire systems, the breakdown of which can lead to negative consequences in the form of stopping the operation of the equipment. Particular attention should be paid to the following elements.
- Inlet filters. Designed to clean the liquid entering the chamber. They are the ones that often fail. But they are easy to fix.
- Injectors . They also play an important role in the operation of the dishwasher pumping station and require complete replacement in case of breakdown.
- Hoses . They allow water to travel through the dishwasher. Deformation of the hose leads to leakage, which also negatively affects the operation of the equipment.
- Water pump . The part is responsible for draining waste water. The liquid is removed using a pump outside the dishwasher hopper.
To extend the service life of equipment and its components, it is worth performing regular maintenance of equipment, repairing or replacing graphite bushings, impellers and other parts.
Step
- At this stage, disassembly of the machine is completed. Now you can work with the faulty element. Lubricate the pump seal with rinse aid to facilitate installation and prevent leaks. Insert the new sump pump into the drain hole, turning it a quarter turn clockwise to secure. Insert the wiring harness into the connector on the drain pump. Connect the drain hose to the outlet of the drain pump. Use a wire clamp to secure the piece.

Step
- Remove the drain pump. Use pliers if necessary. Place a towel to catch water if necessary. Disconnect the drain hose from the drain pump. Remove the wiring harness from the sump pump. Push down on the retainer and then turn the pump a quarter turn counterclockwise to remove it from the crankcase. If you cannot access the drain hose and pump with the access panel and strike plate removed, lift the dishwasher out of the niche. Refer to the Installation Manual for your dishwasher for further explanation.
Peculiarities
A dishwasher is a device with a complex structure in which all elements and systems are connected to each other. Each unit in the dishwasher is responsible for its part of the dishwashing process.
The main element of the equipment is the pump, which is responsible for supplying and removing liquid from the chamber where the dishes are washed.
Any malfunction in the system negatively affects the operation of the pump and reduces the service life of the unit.
Step
- At this stage it is necessary to dismantle the panels. Open the dishwasher door and use a screwdriver to remove the torx mounting screws from the inside of the door panel. Support the piece with your hand so it doesn't fall when you remove the last screws. Carefully remove the outer door panel and control panel from the inner door panel and disconnect the wires.
Step
- The completion of the job is to install the lower front access panel and the impact plate in their original places using bolts. Insert the fasteners and tighten them securely.
