Dishwasher does not drain water: causes, solutions

  • Checking and replacing the pump
  • Video
  • Even reliable household appliances sometimes cease to provide impeccable performance. Similar problems include the following: the dishwasher does not drain water, the dishwashing process is interrupted. It seems that nothing foreshadowed trouble. In fact, the main reason for such a breakdown is improper care of the kitchen assistant.

There is water at the bottom of the dishwasher chamber, the drain does not work

In such a situation, you can dial the phone number of the service center and call a technician. But in most cases, owners of a dishwasher (hereinafter also referred to as PMM, dishwasher) can fix such a malfunction on their own.

    Water cycle in the dishwasher

To figure out why water does not drain from a Bosch, Siemens, Samsung or other brand dishwasher, you need to know how such equipment works.

Water circulation in wash and drain modes

As soon as the washing mode begins, the pump (hereinafter also referred to as the pump) pumps water in a closed cycle. After passing through the sprinklers, water and detergent fall on the surface of plates, bowls, and spoons. Having cleaned them, it flows with the remaining food to the bottom of the chamber, from where it is sucked through the filters by the pump to again enter the spray nozzles, having already been cleaned.

The normal cycle is repeated twice, allowing you to save water consumption. When the washing process ends, the liquid drain mode is activated. It must pass through the filters again, and then go through the drain hose into the sewer. From the above we can conclude: the liquid has stopped being pumped out of the PMM chamber because one of the elements of the drain system is not working . The reason for the failure may be the breakdown of other parts of the dishwasher.

Manual drainage of liquid that the PMM pump could not pump out

The technical features of some models of Bosch dishwashers allow dishes to be washed with dirty water, even if it is not pumped out or filtered. Owners can only detect a breakdown when they open the camera after finishing work. But Bosch PMMs of the SMV, SPS or SKS series in such situations stop the cycle and display error codes E24, E22 or E25 on the panel.

Error code E25 indicates a blockage in the dishwasher pump.

    Draining process

To drain the remaining water from the machine manually, you need to carry out a series of actions, the sequence of which depends on the Bosch PMM model. Older machines have a special ratchet switch that rotates clockwise to drain fluid. In models from the SRV, SGV lines, the program must be reset by closing the hopper door. This action will open the valve automatically. To start forced draining in models of the SMV, SPV series, just hold down the start button for a few seconds.

Now you know what emergency measures to take if the dishwasher refuses to drain the waste liquid. It is enough to localize the problem and fix it yourself. In the event of a control board failure, it is recommended to have the equipment repaired by a specialist. Dishwasher does not drain water: reasons

When dirty liquid is stuck in a traffic jam, unable to go into the sewer system, the main reasons may be:

    1. Clogged filter elements are the most common malfunction. This happens when users neglect to clean dishes from food waste before loading them into the dishwasher or do not clean the filter itself in a timely manner.
    2. Kink in the drainage hose , which is a consequence of unsuccessful installation of the PMM or rearrangement of kitchen furniture.
    3. A clogged drain hose or pump, which occurs when debris somehow gets through the filter into other parts of the drain system.
    4. Damage to the pump or control unit can also lead to similar consequences.
    5. Failure of the water level sensor (hereinafter also referred to as the pressure switch). It is not part of the drain system, but may incorrectly inform the software module (hereinafter also referred to as the control unit, ECU) about the water level in the chamber.

In any of the above cases, the PMM requires cleaning the drainage system or repair

    Software module

It is sort of the brain of the dishwasher. It is the software module that analyzes the washing cycle and also sends signals to actuators (electric heater, pump, inlet valve and other elements). If this module malfunctions, commands may not be sent in full or may not be sent at all.

How to solve the problem in this case? In order for the dishwasher to work again, the software module will need to be re-flashed. If this does not help, we can state that the unit itself is physically damaged. The problem can only be solved by replacing the module with a new one.

    Removing blockages

In each of the above cases, in order to restore the functionality of the equipment, it is necessary to perform certain manipulations. We'll tell you how to do this further.

Cleaning the filter and checking the pump

In a dishwasher, the filter consists of two elements joined together. This design is located at the bottom of the working chamber. In most models, the main filter is framed by a filter mesh, which is also a filter that does not allow food waste to pass through.

The filter and filter mesh can be removed for cleaning

The inner “glass” is made of coarse mesh and is a coarse filter element. When water passes through this part, it hits the surface of an outer metal mesh with small cells - a fine filter element that finally cleans the liquid from food debris.

    Coarse and fine filter elements

To clean the filters, follow these steps:

    1. Remove the dish baskets from the PMM.
    2. Unscrew the filter cap, which is located in the bottom of the chamber, next to the sprayer.
    3. Remove the two dirty filter cups from the niche.
    4. Rinse both filters thoroughly with running water. If necessary, use a toothbrush and any dishwashing detergent.
    5. Open the cover, which is located under the filters and gives access to the pump impeller. Carefully check that the impeller rotates freely. If something is slowing it down, you should remove the blockage using tweezers.
    6. After cleaning, return all parts to their places.

This is what a pump with an impeller looks like in many Bosch and Siemens PMM models

    Sewer cleaning

In this case, the pump does not have time to remove all the water during its operation, since the sewer system is clogged. It is easy to localize the problem - disconnect the drainage hose from the sewer.

If dirty liquid leaks from it, try cleaning the part yourself, for which:

    1. Pour boiling water with dissolved pipeline cleaner into the drainage hole (it is possible that only the siphon is clogged).
    2. If there is no result, try cleaning the pipe with a steel cable (if you have one) or call a plumber.

    Checking the drain hose

It happens that cleaning the filters and checking the sewage system does not lead to the desired result - the water is still not pumped out. This may mean that the drain hose is clogged or pinched.

First, check to see if the hose is pinched by furniture or other objects. Feel it along its entire length (this manipulation helps remove the blockage). Once you are sure the hose is clean and not kinked, turn on the dishwasher to check the drain system. You can disconnect the drainage pipe from the sewer and place it in a large container to make sure it is working.

Disconnecting the drain hose from the sewer

What preventative measures should be taken?

    Prevention methods:

    • the use of high-quality dishwashing detergents that do not contain chemicals that damage the internal structure of the PMM;

    • use of special steel to prevent corrosion;
    • Before installing the dishes, all food residues are carefully removed;
    • It is not recommended to install dishes with strong burning (they are pre-soaked to remove particles);
    • Periodically clean the filter with water and soapy water to prevent excessive contamination.

These methods will help you use your dishwasher for many years without any problems.

    Checking and replacing the pump

If your Bosch dishwasher does not drain water and you cannot hear the sound of the pump running, you will have to check and possibly replace this part. For this:

    1. Remove water from the PMM chamber in any convenient way.
    2. Remove the drain filter.
    3. Place the machine on its side.
    4. Remove the pan and disconnect the Aquastop system sensor from it.
    5. Remove the pump and disconnect the pipes from it.
    6. Check the impeller (it should rotate freely). If it jams, replace the pump.
    7. Check the resistance at the pump contacts with a multimeter. It should be within 200 Ohms if the pump is working properly. Otherwise, the pump must be replaced.
    8. Make sure that the pump is receiving voltage from the control unit. If not, the ECU may be faulty.

Removing the pump for diagnostics and replacement

In conclusion, I would like to note that it is better to entrust the diagnosis and replacement of such faulty parts as the pump, pressure switch and computer to qualified technicians. They have the experience and the necessary equipment to check, and you won’t have to look for original spare parts for repairs.

Standard error codes for popular models

Many modern dishwashers (dishwashers) have a self-diagnosis option. It is embedded in the software module. The machine, using certain algorithms, identifies the failure and displays it on the screen in the form of a specific code.

The depth of such analysis depends on the manufacturer, model, and generation of the control module.

The self-diagnosis system is capable of recognizing up to 200 different breakdowns. The option brings great benefits to both repair specialists and users themselves.

    Error codes for some manufacturers:

    • Bosch - E21-E25, END.
    • Electrolux - END, i20, E24, E21.
    • Ariston - TO03.
    • Electrolux - i20.
    • Candy - E2.

If the dishwasher does not have a display, flashing sensors will indicate a breakdown. How exactly this will happen depends on the model; usually the explanation of the light warning is given in the instructions.

Some Bosch modifications do not react in any way to problems in the drainage system and continue to wash dishes in used water. The user learns about the breakdown only after opening the door at the end of the program, when he sees that there is water in the tank.

How to reset error codes? There are two ways. The first is to turn off the PMM for 15-20 minutes so that it restarts. The second is to click on “On.” and hold for some time. This resets the user settings and returns them to factory settings.

When you can solve the problem yourself

The constant addition and drainage of water from the PMM is not always associated with equipment failure. The following reasons can lead to it, which can be eliminated on your own.

    • Incorrect installation of the machine. If the dishwasher drain hose is located too low, the water will drain out of the tank by itself. In this case, the dishwasher will be forced to constantly add water. In models with a display, the water supply error may light up. The optimal height for the drain hose is 50-60 cm from the floor level. This installation of the hose allows you to avoid both self-draining and backflow of water from the sewer. Check for correct installation; if the hose is not at the correct level, correct installation errors.
    • One-time failure of the control unit. Perhaps the control board is stuck, causing the dishwasher to fill up and immediately drain water. Try disconnecting the PMM from the power supply for 10-15 minutes. If after turning on the machine starts working normally, the problem was a software failure.
