You got ready to do the laundry, put things in the drum, closed the door and turned on the program, but the washing did not start, and the dE code lit up on the display of the LG washing machine. You pulled the hatch handle and found that the hatch was not locked. What happened to your car? Let's figure it out.
Error interpretation
Error DE means the washing machine door is not closed or the door lock is not working. The main cause of the malfunction is the hatch locking device (HLD), but the hinges, handle, latch hook, or control module may also be faulty.
On LG washing machines without a display, the DE code is indicated: all temperature indicators, wash mode and rinse indicators flash or light at the same time.
Such signals indicate that the hatch door is not closed. See also -

LG washing machine: DE error
When choosing a washing machine, buyers primarily focus not only on a wide range of functions, but also on reliability. LG boasts outstanding performance in both of these categories: the manufacturer offers a wide range of models, and all LG washing machines have high build quality.
The LG washing machine is very reliable and will serve you for many years, delighting you with the highest quality of washing and its other functions throughout its entire service life. But all this, of course, is subject to proper and careful use. (You can read the rules on how to care for your LG washing machine in the User Manual that comes with the kit).
However, from time to time, problems with any washing machine can occur. Manufacturers of LG washing machines have foreseen this possibility, so all LG washing machine models without exception are equipped with an error warning function. These are alphanumeric codes that appear on the washing machine display, sometimes accompanied by a beep.
Thanks to this functionality, the operation of equipment is excluded if there is a risk of breakdown or use in violation of safety rules.
All error codes are universal and do not depend on the model of your LG washing machine. A complete list can be found in the User Guide. If for some reason the owner does not have the instructions at hand, information about error codes and methods for eliminating them can be found on the official LG website in the “Frequently Asked Questions” section.
One of the common errors that washing machine owners encounter is the DE error. Sometimes the same designation on the washing machine display may look like dE1, dE2 or DOOR. As you might guess, this error is directly related to the washing machine door. This means that the door is not locked and the washing machine cannot continue to operate.
This error can appear at any stage: washing, rinsing and spinning. If you try to start the process again, the washing machine immediately displays the same error again and the door is blocked.
DE error in LG : main reasons for the error
- There is too much laundry in the washing machine, preventing the door from closing properly.
- When loading, some of the things accidentally got between the rubber coupling and the door, which also prevents the door from closing.
- Mechanical damage or distortion of the washing machine door.
- There is a malfunction in the electronic lock of the washing machine lock.
The last two cases require the intervention of a qualified specialist. Do not try to fix the problem yourself; contact an official LG Service Center.
In other cases, you can fix the DE error yourself at home. Here's what you need to do to do this:
DE error LG washing machine : solutions
- Try pressing the door tighter. It may not have closed properly. You should hear a characteristic click indicating that the door is closed correctly.
- Try opening and closing the washing machine door again. In some cases, this helps resolve the DE error.
- Make sure you do not load too much laundry into the washing machine. The drum of each washing machine is designed for a certain volume of clothes. It is measured in kg. Information about the drum size of your washing machine can be found in the Technical Data Sheet of the device. If there is too much laundry (you had to force yourself to load it. The washing drum is completely full and the clothes are compacted), remove some of the laundry, and then continue washing.
- Make sure that there are no foreign objects, such as clothing or foreign objects, between the rubber coupling and the door.
- Carefully examine the hinges of the washing machine door. They may have become warped (this can happen as a result of long-term use of the washing machine and mechanical wear of parts).
- The reason may be a failure of the washing machine control module. Unplug your LG washing machine (carefully unplug the cord), wait about 20 minutes, and then plug it back in.
How to fix the error yourself
It would seem that the cause of the malfunction is known and all you need to do is close the hatch more tightly. Often, such actions are enough and the problem disappears. Otherwise, the malfunction occurs for a more serious reason:
- Breakage of the latch hook, hatch locking device
- Displacement of the spring or clamp, hatch blocking device
- Malfunction of the electronic sensor of the sunroof locking device
- Washing machine control board malfunction
Important:
The most common causes of the error are listed here; other lesser-known breakdowns are also possible, and to accurately determine them, it is recommended to call a specialist.
In cases where the DE code occurs, it is recommended to carry out a series of sequential actions that can help get rid of the error yourself.
- First, you should check the tightness of the hatch; it may not be closed. To do this, you just need to press it harder.
- You should also inspect the entire door for external obstructions.
- Inspect the hatch door from the inside; clothing may have gotten between the loading hatch and the drum and is preventing it from closing tightly. You should also pay attention to the locking tab; there may be objects on it that interfere with closing.
- Check the hatch door for any distortions; if any are found, it is necessary to tighten the side hinges.
- If none of the above is found or does not help, you should completely reset the washing machine. To do this, perform the following steps in sequence: open the hatch, disconnect the machine from the network by unplugging the plug from the socket, wait 15-20 minutes, then plug the machine back in and close the hatch.
If after performing the above steps the error persists, then it makes sense to consider other causes of the malfunction.
Hatch disassembly tutorial
Let's look at the step-by-step actions:
- First of all, the hatch must be dismantled. To do this, unscrew the two screws.
Unscrew the fastenings
- Then we turn the hatch over and place it on the table. Unscrew all the screws in a circle.
- Use a slotted screwdriver to pry off one half. We go like this along the diameter. Then, you need to pull it out of the grooves.
- Supporting the glass, carefully separate it.
Remove the screws in a circle
- After this the castle will be visible.
- Having replaced or corrected, repeat the steps in reverse order.
Getting to the lock mechanism
Important! We photograph the hatch from all sides. And the location of the hook!
Malfunctions requiring repair
Use the following table to determine the cause of the error:
Description of the problem | Reason for error | Solution |
The hatch door does not close completely and does not lock. | The latch hook is badly worn or broken | Replacing an element |
The door closes and locks, but the machine does not start the washing program. | The locking device has failed | Replacing an element |
In wash, rinse or spin mode, the washing machine stopped working and displayed a DE error. There is a burning smell. | The control module is faulty. Most often, the microcircuit “suffers” due to burnout of contacts during power surges or due to water getting into the electronics. | You need to remove the front panel by dismantling the top part of the machine. After this, remove the board. Damaged areas are immediately visible - they turn black, the caps of the capacitors become convex, and traces of breaks are visible. If a faulty part is detected, it is soldered off and a new one is installed in its place. |
The handle does not work and the door does not lock. | Handle breakage | Replacing an element |
The hatch door does not close and there is a misalignment | Hinge wear | Adjusting hinges or replacing them completely |
Preventive measures
You can prevent the DE code from appearing on your washing machine by following the prevention rules. When operating the unit you must:
- carefully check the pockets of clothes before washing and empty them of all small items;
- do not overload the machine and ensure that the total weight of things does not exceed the maximum values specified in the manufacturer's manual;
- do not place heavy objects and equipment on top of the device to avoid distortion of the body and door;
- Protect the machine from excess humidity and constant vibrations during the washing process.
If the DE error cannot be resolved using simple measures, you must contact a service center for repairs. Attempts to repair the hatch or locking mechanism yourself may result in the complete failure of the unit. As a result, you will have to pay much more for repairs.
Looking for a reason
If the DE error appears again and again on a Samsung washing machine, you need to carefully examine the unit. First, we try to close the loading hatch more tightly. If the situation has not changed, you need to open the door, disconnect the unit from the power supply and wait 15-20 minutes. For some Samsung and LG models, such a reboot allows the mechanism to return to normal. If after a rest the unit operates normally, then the problem has been resolved.
If the DE error persists on a Samsung washing machine, it is recommended to do the following:
- Open the door and check the integrity and functionality of the fixing hook.
- We check the compartment in which the hook is fixed.
- We check the presence of contact in the electrical controller.
If after all the manipulations carried out, the Samsung washing machine started working normally. This means that the user was not able to correct the situation, but only discovered the cause. In this situation, you will have to replace the locking device of the washing machine.
Methods for solving the problem
If the reason for the DE code in a Samsung or LG washing machine is the wear of the rubber seal, clamp or spring, you can replace these elements yourself.
If you discover a breakdown of a small electrical controller board, you can also fix the problem yourself.
However, if the inspection fails to identify the cause, you should not dismantle the unit and penetrate deep into the system. In this case, it is rational to call a specialist. Firstly, it will save time, and secondly, it will allow you to quickly find and repair the faulty part. You can watch the video about the nuances of eliminating errors under code DE.
We fix the problem ourselves
There are several generally accepted rules that will help cope with the problem. They are used in certain situations:
- The hatch did not close tightly - you need to check, most likely, you did not apply the required force when closing, or something got between the door and the rubber seal that is preventing it from closing. We recommend performing the action again; you should hear a characteristic click.
- The network voltage has dropped - check. If there is no 200 volts in the network, the hatch lock does not work. But the problem can be solved - a relay is installed that controls the voltage.
- The hole for the door tongue in the lock is clogged - make sure everything is in order.
- The hinge fasteners of the door have become loose - as a result, the tongue does not always fit into the lock, and the hatch may not close. You'll have to tighten the fastenings.
- A failure of the control or display unit has occurred - when the error appears for the first time, simply unplug the machine from the socket, pause for about ten minutes, and turn on the device again. The unit will reboot, it is quite possible that the error will disappear.
- Poor contact - it is necessary to check the area from the hatch blocker to the unit responsible for general control. It happens that the vibration of the SM during operation is the reason that the contact connections “come off”.
If your actions are unsuccessful, it means that the machine is seriously damaged and needs professional repair.
Breakdowns and problems with “Ed”
When the code “Ed” appears on the machine’s display, it means one of the following problems is occurring:
- the hatch for loading laundry does not close;
- if the code is broken after washing, the door is locked;
- The door closes, but the locking mechanism does not work.
Taking into account the complexity of the problem, the problem can either be minimal, which you can fix yourself, or you will have to call a washing machine repairman to your home.
How to identify a fault
If your Samsung appliance shows an Ed error when washing, carry out a simple diagnosis before calling a technician.
Basic check
For an initial check of equipment:
- make sure that the washing machine is tightly closed;
- Check to see if there is a foreign object between the door and the body of the Samsung device that is blocking the hatch.
In both cases, the answer to the question “how to fix the breakdown” is obvious - just remove the blocking element and slam the hatch tightly. If the problem is not resolved, check for more complex causes of the problem.
Replacing the electrical controller
If you can determine exactly why the washing machine is giving the DE error and the reason lies in a faulty controller, there is no need to change the entire blocking device. It is enough to replace the controller. To carry out this repair, you need to do the following:
- Remove the plastic panel that covers the controller.
- Unscrew the fixing screws holding the required element.
- Remove the large controller board.
- We inspect the smaller board and find visible damage.
- If damage is found, the board will need to be replaced.
- If the problem cannot be found, you will have to contact a specialist.
Often the machine produces an error code DE due to factory defects in the boards. But it is impossible to determine marriage at home. Only a master, using a special device, will be able to identify the defect.
