During the operation of a washing machine (WMA), parts and mechanisms age and break down. Under the influence of hot water and the chemically active powders used, scale deposits on the walls of the hoses, which leads to the formation of cracks and a decrease in strength. This threatens the formation of fistulas, the pouring of water in addition to the sewer into the room and its contact with live equipment. To eliminate the defect, you need to install a new part. Replacing the drain hose of a washing machine yourself is not difficult, and the amount of work depends on the brand of the unit.
When replacement is required
To remove water from the SMA, a flexible corrugated pipe made of gray-painted polypropylene is provided. The material is quite durable and is little susceptible to aggressive substances. However, situations may arise that require replacing the hose in the washing machine:
- Initially, a defective product was installed in the unit. A hidden defect may appear after several washes.
- The supplied hose is of insufficient length. You can lengthen it, but the likelihood of leaks in the connection will increase. Experts recommend installing a product of the required size during the installation of the SMA.
- Mechanical damage during operation of the unit. Most often, a leak occurs due to a fracture or flattening of the drain hose.
- Reduction in the flow area of the pipe as a result of the deposition of scale and dirt on the corrugation. For this reason, the pressure on the pump pressure increases, which can lead to the hose jumping off the drainage pump connection.
The defect can be visually determined only on that part of the corrugated product that is located on the rear wall of the unit. Leaks in the remaining hose are detected after removing the MMA casing or by the presence of water under the machine. This depends on the brand of the unit.
What is flexible eyeliner?
First of all, although this option for supplying water is considered budgetary, it is quite reliable, provided the materials are chosen and the connection technology is followed.
In essence, a flexible hose is a rubber hose (the same as a watering hose) placed in a tight-fitting braid made of metal threads. Its main function is protection from external and internal mechanical damage. The latter may occur due to water hammer. In accordance with the standards, such connecting hoses must be designed for a pressure of at least 10 atm.
Below is an example of connecting a herringbone sink faucet with flexible hoses (A) used to supply cold and hot water.

Which hose to choose
Before replacing a defective sleeve, you must purchase a new product of the required length and suitable for this washing machine. The retail chain has a large selection of hoses that differ in size and manufacturer:
- Standard. The length ranges from 1 to 5 m. Tips made of soft rubber are soldered into the ends. The diameters of the parts are different and are 19 and 22 mm. One part of the hose is attached to the drain pump pipe, and the other part is attached to the sewerage receiving device.
- Sleeve in a bay. It is convenient because you can buy a product of the desired length. Sold in bays. Assembled from 50 cm sections soldered together. The sleeve is cut off according to the existing serifs. End fittings are most often metal, but it is possible to install rubber tips.
- Telescopic. The assembled sleeve has a length of 0.6 m and can increase to 2 m. The negative side of such products is the large height of the corrugation, which leads to clogging and a decrease in the flow area. Susceptible to mechanical damage during stretching. When the pump operates, the product vibrates, which can lead to cracks.
An excessively long drain hose negatively affects the operation of the pump, leading to overload and failure. Sleeves should not be placed on the floor, because This leads to stagnation of water and the appearance of an unpleasant odor. The maximum distance from the machine to the drain should not exceed 3.3 m.
Reasons for failure
Drainage tubes are made of polymer, which has the ability to resist destruction under the influence of external load. And also a long service life. Sometimes it may fail. The need to replace the hose arises:
- when purchasing a device with a short drain hose. In this case, a short part can be extended using polymer pieces. However, due to the increase in detachable connections, the risk of fluid leakage increases;
- in case of depressurization of the drain hose of the washing machine. Loss of surface seal can be restored using aluminum construction tape or PVC adhesive tape. However, this method will help get rid of trouble for a short time;
- when solid hardness salts accumulate in the corrugated pipe and form a stench. In this case, the tube can be cleaned using a tool with a Kevlar brush. However, this method does not always give good results.
How to remove the old one
Work to dismantle a defective hose depends on the brand of SMA. However, there are a number of actions that must be performed on any unit. To change the drain hose:
- disconnect the SMA from the power supply and disconnect it from the water supply;
- unscrew the filter and drain the remaining water;
- remove unnecessary objects that interfere with the work;
- Prepare your tools and move the unit away from the wall.
It is easiest to remove a defective hose from washing machines of the Samsung, Indesit and LG brands, because You can get to it through the bottom without dismantling the panels. To do this you need:
- tilt the MCA in the direction opposite to the placement of the filter;
- on the front panel, unscrew the screws securing the drainage unit and push it inside the unit;
- remove the hose fixing clamp from the pump pressure pipe;
- pull the hose out through the hole in the back wall;
- install and secure the new product.
The assembly of the unit is carried out in the reverse order. Then you need to check the tightness of the newly installed unit.
Replacing a sleeve with a Bosch SMA is performed in a similar way, only access to the attachment point is made through the front wall. Dismantling is carried out in the following sequence:
- remove the washing powder dispenser tray;
- dismantle the cuff clamp of the loading hatch;
- remove the panel at the bottom of the MCA;
- unscrew the fastening screws at the top and bottom of the front wall;
- having applied to themselves, they are removed from the hooks.
On Bosch machines, the drainage unit can be located on either the right or left side. On some Samsung models, hoses with L-shaped fittings are installed, which are attached to the pump nozzle. Due to the fact that this unit is not visible from the outside, you need to decide in advance on the configuration of the hose.
For SMA with vertical loading, the sleeve is dismantled through the side wall. To remove it, just loosen the fasteners and move the panel to the side. This then opens access to the pump.

To get to the drain hose mount and replace it in machines of these brands, you need to remove the front wall, and you will also need to remove a number of other components. The work algorithm will look like this.
- The sealing cuff is removed from the hatch, which is held in place by the clamp.
- The detergent dispenser tray is detached from the machine.
- The plastic panel located at the bottom of the machine is removed.
- The remaining water is drained.
- The screws holding the front wall are unscrewed. Two of them are at the bottom and one at the top.
- The wall is removed, which must first be pulled towards you and then moved down.
- The wires coming from the hatch lock are disconnected.
It is also possible to disconnect the hose by loosening the holding clamp. Then it is removed from the wall and brought out. The new one should be inserted as tightly as possible, after which it is clamped with a clamp. Check the reliability of the fastening and whether the hose is installed correctly and whether there are any kinks on it. Next, route it inside the car and take it outside. The work is done, now all that remains is to assemble everything and connect the washing machine to the sewer system.
How to properly position a new hose
There are special clips for attaching the casting sleeve to the back wall of the SMA. You can’t just lower it to the floor and connect it to the sewer. This may cause unauthorized drainage of water from the tank and expose the heating element. Not only the quality of washing, but also the operation of the unit without breakdowns depends on the correct placement of the hose.
The outlet fitting is connected to a receiving device, which can be located on a sewer pipe or on a sink siphon.
The pipes must be located at a height of at least 0.6 m from the floor.
If the room in which the machine is installed is not equipped with such receivers, then the drain can be organized into any plumbing fixture. To attach the sleeve, use the complete holder. However, such disposal of dirty water is undesirable, because after washing a lot of dirt remains in the sink or bathtub.
Kinds
These water hoses come in the following types:
- for connecting the washbasin mixer, shower cabin and other equipment to hot water. To identify them, red threads are added to the braid (“A” in Fig. 2);
- for connection with cold water supply pipes. Their braid contains blue threads (“B”);
- universal, allow connection to any type of water supply. The braid of such pipes is marked red and blue (“C”).

In addition, the eyeliner differs in the braid material, which is reflected in certain characteristics, namely:
- Aluminum reinforcement. Currently practically not used. The only advantage is the low price, which is not justified due to the short service life (3 years). In addition, such protection cannot withstand pressures of more than 5 atm. But the main drawback is instability to corrosion. In a damp room, the braid quickly deteriorates and the rubber hose quickly becomes unusable. Therefore, such pipes can be used when connecting kitchen equipment, for example, a mixer with a pull-out shower head (with a flexible hose), but they are not suitable for a bathroom or shower.

- Stainless steel braid (the most common type). This design option significantly extends the service life (a high-quality product can be used for at least 10 years). These pipes can withstand a pressure of 10 atm and they have no restrictions on the type of premises, that is, installation is allowed even in a steam room.

- Nylon braiding significantly improves performance. They can be used for 15 years, and they are designed for pressures of up to 20 atm and a temperature of the technical environment of 110°C. True, the cost of these pipes is higher than that of the two previous types. In everyday life, it is not advisable to use eyeliner with nylon braid.

There are pipes where the hoses are made not of rubber, but of rubber; they are more reliable, but also much more expensive.
As additional protection, the braid can be coated with a silicone layer, according to manufacturers, this allows the service life to be extended to 20 years.

Despite the fact that it is also physically flexible, it is customary to distinguish this type of eyeliner as a separate type, due to significant design differences. The peculiarity of the bellows liner is that the shell is a metal corrugation, durable and flexible; in addition, there is no rubber hose inside.

It is also worth noting that the fitting together with the terminal clamp are connected to the corrugated hose by welding, this significantly increases the reliability of the design. The service life of products of this type is at least 25 years, and they can be used to work with process environments heated to 250°C. As a rule, corrugation is made of stainless steel, but there are VIP category plumbing fixtures where brass and copper are used for this purpose.
This is a new type of liner, and at the moment there have been no appearances of non-original products on the market and the price is significantly higher than conventional connecting hoses.
Is it possible to lengthen
After purchasing and installing the SMA, it may turn out that the length of the complete drain hose is not enough to connect to the drain point. The problem can be solved in 2 ways: buy a device of the right size or extend the existing one.
To join the sleeves, you need to:
- Install the connecting tube into the tips of both products.
- Secure the assembly with clamps.
- Fix the corrugated tube in the clamps so that the joint is visible.
Lengthening the hose will increase the load on the pump and increase the likelihood of leaks in the connection. Therefore, it is better to install the part of the required size, without joints.
Prevention measures
Usually, a clogged washing machine hose occurs on its own. Small objects cannot get into it, as they will get stuck in the pump or drain filter.
This can be avoided by following these rules:
- Wash items using a special bag;
- Use water softeners;
- Regularly descale the machine;
- Wash only using powder - automatic;
- Before washing, turn clothing pockets inside out and remove all foreign objects from them.
